Self Defense

Submitted by on May 22, 2010 – 10:14 PMNo Comment

One class I have always thought about taking is self defense.  I actually should have taken it in college or high school for that manner, but I figure it is never too late to be prepared.  I remember back in high school when I was taking night classes and how creepy it was to walk across the campus alone, with basically no lighting.  I would carry my cell phone in one hand and mace in the other and hoped that was enough.  Luckily it was and I never had an incident but I know many women are not as lucky as I was.  There are just so many women and girls (myself included) that think that something terrible could never happen to them.

I am also more paranoid because True Crimes books are one of my favorite genres and I am a Lifetime Movie fanatic.  I think it is just ingrained in me that bad stuff happens all the time and it can happen to anyone.  I am not naïve but then again I am not as prepared as I should be.  I think a self defense class would be a great opportunity to not only learn how to protect myself but also my family.  I am not at all coordinated so I would probably just wail my arms in a tough situation, but if I was properly trained I would probably stay safer.  I am not sure of the ages for a class but I would say the younger the better because women of all ages get attacked and need help.  I would start with your local park district and go from there as far as finding a local class in your area.  It could save your life and even though I hate that women have the stigma that they are helpless, it isn’t a bad thing to be over prepared.
