Shell Education {Workbooks for Kids} Review

Workbooks are something I have always loved. As a child I loved them and remember being so excited to work on the different pages. Even as an adult I love workbooks, although now they are more so in the style of brain puzzles such as Sudoku and Crosswords. I think workbooks and puzzles are great to get your brain working and stay on top of your toes! Now with my own children, I encourage workbooks so they don’t fall behind. I have them do two workbook pages a day each and they are now getting excited about them. It is great to see them excited about learning and see how proud they get when they complete a page.

Shell Education is a family owned, innovative publishing company which developes high quality research – and standards-based professional developemnet and teacher and student resources for the education market. Bright & Brainy Grade Level Practice is a new series for Grades K-6 that encourages students to reinforce their knowledge of mathmatics and language arts grade-level skills. I got the chance to try out two new books from the Bright & Brainy Grade Level Practice: Grade K and Grade 1.

Bright & Brainy: 1st Grade Practice

This classroom resource encourages first grade students to reinforce their knowledge of mathematical and language arts grade-level skills. Focusing on specific Common Core Standards, this resource is designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, helping students prepare themselves for life beyond their educational careers. Students will gain regular practice through the quick activities found in each book. Perfect for additional practice in the classroom or at home! The book contains a Teacher Resource CD with PDFs of the activity pages. 208pp.

Bright & Brainy: Kindergarten Practice

This classroom resource encourages kindergarten students to reinforce their knowledge of mathematical and language arts grade-level skills. 208pp.

These two books are amazing! First off, the covers are colorful and kid-friendly so my boys don’t cringe when I take them out.  The books have so many great activities inside that are very much age appropriate and keep them thinking and on their toes.  They are challenging but not overwhelming and the books seem to start out slow and work their way harder.  They are activities that really do challenge my boys who are currently in Preschool and Kindergarten.  The lessons involve Language Arts (reading and writing) and Mathematics.

As a parent I have no clue what my boys should know at their age and these workbooks help me guide them in the right direction.  I have them complete 1-2 pages a day as “homework” now, since they don’t get homework currently.  Then as they get older I will use workbooks on weekends and vacations.  I really like the Shell Education workbooks, not sure what it is about them that makes them different but I just feel they are really helpful and enjoyable to my kids.  The CD at the end is a great bonus too as it contains printable activity pages and resources, so once the book is used you can continue the learning process!

I also read that Shell Education correlates all of their products to the academic standards of all 50 Unites States, the District of Columbia, the Department of Defense Dependent Schools and all Canadian provinces.  The standards are set to identify the skills students will learn in kindergarten through grade twelve.  Shell Education keeps their lessons in line with what the Common Core State Standards are.
