New American Girl Movie “Ivy & Julie 1976: A Happy Balance”

Finding a balance is something so many of us struggle with every day, but for kids, it can be especially hard. Whether it involve family, sports, school, kids are still learning how to deal with their problems. Leave it to American Girl to come out with an Original Special featuring two girls dealing with finding a balance.

Amazon Original Special An American Girl Story – Ivy & Julie 1976: A Happy Balance premiered on Amazon Prime Video on Friday, March 24.

Set in 1976 San Francisco, Ivy Ling (Nina Lu, BUNK’d ) is a 10-year-old Chinese-American girl who struggles with finding a balance between her two cultural identities: Chinese and American. When her gymnastics all-city tournament lands on the same day her parents are hosting a big Chinese New Year dinner, Ivy is torn between competing with her team and honoring her family obligations. She confides her struggle to her best friend, Julie Albright  (Hannah Nordberg, General Hospital), who is dealing with her own emotional turmoil since her parents’ divorce. In the end, Ivy must make a difficult choice, and with the help her mom and Julie, learns that being true to yourself is the best way to land on your feet. The special also stars Gwendoline Yeo (American Crime) and Lance Lim (School of Rock).

American Girl currently has two other original specials on Amazon Prime:

The first two original American Girl specials for Prime Video, An American Girl Story – Melody 1963: Love Has to Win and An American Girl Story – Maryellen 1955: Extraordinary Christmas, were based on the characters Melody Ellison and Maryellen Larkin from the BeForever historical-inspired character line. Both specials are currently available to stream on Prime Video.

An American Girl Story – Melody 1963: Love Has to Win recently won several awards including a Parents’ Choice Gold Award, NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Children’s Program, Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Children’s Programs, and a Humanitas Prize in the Children’s Live Action Category.
