Previously I wrote about the benefits from saving your babies umbilical cord blood due to the life saving benefits. Now the company Cryo-Cell International, Inc. has announced the results of a new study they completed. According to their study, adding menstrual blood stem cells (MenSCs) to stem cells from umbilical cord blood expands the number of cells that grow into mature blood cells (progenitor cells.) This new technique allows a broader scope of therapeutic use of the cells and allows for a more readily available supply of stem cells for transplantation.
Cord blood stem cells have been proven to treat more than 70 life-threatening illnesses, such as leukemia, lymphoma, and sickle cell anemia. I was amazed at how powerful the umbilical cord blood could be and how it is such an unheard of practice to save it. I was shocked to read that since the first successful cord blood stem cell transplant in 1988, cord blood cells have been used in more than 10,000 transplants worldwide.
The research Cryo-Cell International, Inc. began when they used harvested cells from menstrual blood and cord blood cells collected after childbirth and reduce the number of red blood cells. I am sure this is only the beginning and with continued research it will be interesting to see what can come.
Now I have not saved either of my son’s umbilical cord blood, but since I have such a variety of readers, I just wanted to pass this CryoCell Press Release on. I don’t mean to argue with anyone’s beliefs, I just want to share this information.
