iPhone / iPod Touch App Review: Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes

Created by a mom with a desire to share a fun and engaging mobile experience with her kids, HEAD, SHOULDERS, KNEES & TOES features the beloved children’s song in an interactive game designed to entertain and educate preschoolers. This preschool iphone game was developed by Animal Crackers and features 4 distinct mini-games – Song, Tap Along, Puzzle and Tickles.

HEAD, SHOULDERS, KNEES & TOES Mini-Games:
• SONG – Perfect for all the budding musicians and music lovers in the family. The game features the beloved children’s song to identify the lion’s head, shoulders knees and toes.
• TAP ALONG: Tap the lion as indicated and you’ll hear a short verse from “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes.” Keep tapping correctly and you’ll hear the whole song! Clear text of the lyrics at the bottom helps to teach word recognition.
• PUZZLE – Tap the puzzle piece at the bottom of the screen and figure out where it belongs on the lion.
• TICKLES – Follow the directions and tap the lion’s head, arm, legs (and more) to make him giggle!

REWARD SCREEN:
Kids are rewarded with a cookie jar that fills with 10 adorable animal crackers. In addition to rewarding their progress, the cookie jar teaches number recognition from 1 to 10. Give the jar a shake, they’ll love what happens.

MY REVIEW:

I think the App is cute, especially since my son doesn’t talk but he is learning the song by touching the corresponding body parts.  He also learned this song is school about a month ago, so that helps too.  There are basically five interactive games in this App.

1)  Song – Listen to the Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes song as it is sang by kids.
2) Tap Along – Tap the lion’s body parts to create the Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes song.
3) Puzzle – match lion body parts to where they are missing on his body
4) Tickles – tickle the part of the body that it tells you to
5) Jar – Check out your animal crackers that you earned and shake the jar to watch them move!

Now yes this game is simple and I was bored with it, but Aidan really liked it.  It teaches matching, words, body parts, memorization, all while having fun!  It does get old hearing the song, but so far Aidan is still playing with it and he will even put down my iPod to point on his body the different body parts, so I like how he is comprehending the lion and his body parts.  The game also does have a few different ways to play which is nice.  I think my favorite is “Tickles” because when you tickle the lion you hear kids laughing, which in turn makes us laugh!  As far as flaws, I wish maybe the Tap Along would go a little faster, as it is basically the song with only the body parts and goes slow.  Overall, I would recommend this app for any aged child as it is cute and super easy to use and navigate.
