Have You Checked Your Fire Extinguisher Lately?

One item that I didn’t think of buying when we bought our first home are fire extinguishers.  I actually never owned one in any of my past apartments, which thankfully I never needed one.  When we moved into our first house my in-laws bought us two to keep spaced out throughout our house and I think that was such a great idea!  It is one of those things that you hope you don’t ever need and therefore many people don’t think to have one on hand just in case.

I now keep a fire extinguisher in my laundry room and under my sick.  Really since we have three levels, I should have at least one on every level so I am making a mental note to pick up more!  I also should read one so I know physically how to work it because with my luck I will need one and not have a clue on how to use it!  I also have the habit of burying them and shoving them in back, so I also need to make sure they are in clear and easily accessible location.  I think checking fire extinguishers along with fire alarms should be something checked at least once a year along with spring-cleaning.

So my sister is moving into her first apartment and now that I am thinking of it, I think buying her one and teaching her how to use it would be a good moving in present.  I know she is not going to understand now and not that I hope she will ever need one, but I will feel safer knowing she has one and knows how to use it.  Sorry if I seem like I am rambling, I just happen to glimpse our fire extinguisher while cleaning out under my sink, and realize that it is something to add to my spring list to check!

  • My hubby used to be on the volunteer fire dept. in the community in which we live. Here's some added info on fire extinguishers, you should gentle invert them a few times and roll them gently side to side a few times once every one or two weeks to keep the chemicals suspended and not settling to the bottom of their tanks. This keeps them more efficient in the event they are needed to put out a fire. It's probably best to take a class or see a video on how to use a fire extinguisher correctly at your local fire dept.. If used incorrectly it could cause a fire to spread instead of put it out. It's best to see it done than try to read the instructions during an emergency. Some communities have days set aside at fire deptartments where not only do they teach such, but let you have hands on experience holding, pulling the pin, and getting as close as you can to a simulated fire to begin the extinguisher spraying and walking back from the simulated flames still spraying the extinguisher so you can get a feel for it.
