Spark

Did you know there are different types of Fire Extinguishers?

There is a Water extinguisher that is suitable for fires involving combustible materials such as paper, wood, cardboard, and most plastics, this is called Class A.  These extinguishers are filled with water and pressurized with air.  You should never use a water extinguisher on grease fires, electrical fires or fires found in a chemical laboratory (Class D.)  Next there is a Dry chemical extinguisher, which are suitable for most fires including combustible fires, flammable fires or combustible liquids (Class B) and fires involving electrical equipment (Class C.)  These extinguishers are filled with foam or powder and pressurized with nitrogen.  Finally there are CO2 fire extinguishers, which will work on both class B and class C fires.  They contain carbon dioxide, a non-flammable gas, and are highly pressurized.  They will not work well on combustible materials fires because they do not release enough oxygen to put the fire out, which may cause it to re-ignite.  The advantage though of CO2 fire extinguishers is that they do not leave a harmful residue, especially if the fire is on a computer or other electronic device.

So I mentioned above a few common types of fire extinguishers, but of course, I would check with a fire department and see what they recommend.  I hope no one ever needs one of these, but you can never be too safe.  I also think it is important to know about the different types of fires and ways to extinguish them as I was clueless about that!  Using the wrong fire extinguisher can increase the fire and cause more damage and possibly cost lives, so it really is important to know what you are doing and how to do it.
