Something is Beeping…

So recently there was a terrible beeping in my house and neither my husband nor I could figure it out.  We checked everywhere and it was beep that we hadn’t heard before.  Finally, we figured out it was our battery backup from our sump pump.  Apparently, you need to add water to it every now and then to keep it ready.  Seems strange but it only took my husband a few minutes a couple bottles of water to make the terrible beeping go away.

Hearing the beeping though reminded me of our last house where we had the worst smoke detectors ever.  They beeped every time we made breakfast and not only did they beep, but they also talked saying “Fire Fire!”  It was so weird and loud.  I am sure our neighbors hated it because our houses were so close and since every smoke detector in our house went off if one detected smoke, they all beeped and talked!  It reminded me of the boy who cried wolf and I figured when we really did have a fire emergency I probably wouldn’t have one of my fire extinguishers ready because I would assume it was a false alarm.  I know it defeats the purpose, which is why eventually we disconnected it until we remembered to replace it.  It made me wonder though how many fires could have been prevented had someone taken it seriously and had a fire extinguisher ready.  Luckily in our new house we haven’t had smoke detector issues, but then again it was comforting to know they worked in our last house.

I definitely need to add checking our smoke detectors to our list to check.  They are just one of those things that you just assume is going to work when the time is ready and hopefully it won’t be too late.

  • I used to have smoke detectors that were also like crying wolf. They didn't talk but went off even if I made a piece of toast (no the toaster wasn't dirty).
Now, we have good smoke alarms.
Hey the high piercing beeping thing for us ended up being the back up battery on our freezer that always keeps a display up indicating how cold the freezer is inside. Since it's in the garage it took us awhile to figure out what it was and where the replacement battery was suppose to go. I mean we were hunting for the instruction booklet. I told hubby for now on the booklet is going to be attached to the side of the freezer so we don't have to hunt for it.

  • OMG, the apartment we lived in before we bought our house had the craziest smoke alarm I have ever encountered. All we had to do was make toast, not even burning it (even if we emptied all the old crumbs every time), and the smoke alarm would go off. And I like to cook, so it went off daily (at least). I'm sure our neighbors were quite sick of us and our stupid, wired-in-place smoke alarm, and I'm positive I saw the little old lady next door do a little dance as she watched us move out.
