The (New) Karate Kid

So I keep seeing the previews for the movie “Karate Kid” and I am just not sure what to think about it.  I mean for kids who have never seen the original, I am sure they will like it, especially since Jaden Smith is in and he seems to be popular.  I just think it is weird to do a remake of such a classic movie.  I mean without Ralph Macchio or Mr. Miyagi I don’t think I would like it.

Now that I am thinking about the movie, I can’t believe how old it is!  The original Karate Kid came out in 1984 after the success of Rocky and was an immediate success.  I can’t even tell you how many times I have seen that movie and I don’t even like martial arts.  I actually don’t really like fighting at all – no boxing, kicking, punching or anything else that seems real.  Now if it is an action movie and there is blood, that doesn’t bother me because it just doesn’t seem real to me.

Well anyways so Karate Kid (both old and new) is a movie about an underdog who learns martial arts from an elder man to protect themselves from a bully.  I think it is a great theme for kids, especially since it teaches that fighting should be controlled and taught.  The movie also teaches kids that it is okay to be different and how important it is to prepare.

Luckily my boys are young still so we won’t be seeing this movie and when they are old enough, I am going to slip in the original movie first for them.  It just would be weird with the new cast and since they both have the same premise, I don’t think my boys would mind that the graphics are not as fresh as newer movies!

Are you going to see the new Karate Kid or are you a Ralph Macchio fan?

  • I will probably see it because it really does look like a good movie, but I kind of agree with you-I don't think the original needed to be remade.

Maybe they thought it was time for a remake to appeal to a younger generation? Whatever the reason, I know there are some people not happy about the remake.

    Great post!

  • So glad you posted this!! I was confused yesterday when my daughters girlfriend said she went to the movies with her mom and watch The Karate Kid. I asked her if it looked like an old movie (to her and my daughter I am older then dirt!!) And she told me no. I was really confused!! I had no idea there was a new one out!!

  • My husband took the kids to see it today. They LOVED it...(I stayed home and enjoyed some "me" time)
