Does a child need an ID?

I have heard of them before but I never really thought of getting ID cards made for my boys.  I mean they are only 2 and 3 years old and they are pretty much always with me.  I also don’t know where I would put an ID card because it is not like they carry around a purse and if I put it in their pockets they would probably take it out anyways.  Now when we go out to crowded places like the zoo or amusement park, I do try to remember to put on the temporary tattoos where I write in my cell phone number, but that is about it.  It is just a scary thought though and no parent thinks that they will loose their children, but they do run off and there are bad people in this world too.

So when a friend of mine mentioned that she was going to make up an ID for her preschooler I did agree that it was a great idea, but it is not really for me.  Now she is not going to go as far as using id card software, but she is making it on her own.  Now I do see the benefit of making something up and putting it in the child’s backpack for school, but then I wonder if it would even get looked at.  I suppose it would be good if my son wandered off with his backpack on or if he bag got lost they could identify it easily.  I am still not sure but I am leaning towards putting something to identify him at least in his backpack especially since my 3 year old does not talk yet and all he can say is “mom.”  I suppose it is better to be safe than sorry.

  • Another idea is an ID bracelet. I bought one from here for my son a year or two ago:

I love it. He never takes it off, we've had lots of people notice and ask about it. Most think it's an allergy ID bracelet, but it's not. It has his name on it, our address and Mom & Dad's phone numbers. I was a runner when I was little, so I wanted to be prepared when he started walking. Thankfully he's not a runner, but it does make me feel a little better knowing that if he DOES get away from me, people will know who he belongs to!

  • I have never done ID's for young children for them to carry. It's not off the wall to have id's made for your children with their finger/thumb print and listed physical features with their picture. Updated yearly. I have done this. It is a way to help authorities if the unimaginable happens and they get lost or taken. Police even recommend you keep one in your wallet, at home, and one for each person who may be a care giver to your child.
