MY THOUGHTS:

Okay so I was fortunate enough to receive Zhu Zhu pets last year before they came out (see review here) and ever since the habitat has become a permanent fixture in my dining room.  Now I am lucky to have a huge space to keep these up, as I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t because my boys love them.

So about a month ago I received a giant (and I mean giant) box and had no idea what it was.  I opened it up with my 3 year old’s help and it was seriously like Christmas for both of us.  I admit I am also a Zhu Zhu pet fan!  The box contained the entire set of the new Kung Zhu Battle Hamsters, 11 hamsters, and 11 pieces of armor!  So yes not only did I get the giant battle arena playset, but also all the cars and enough to have a Kung Zhu party!  Now I didn’t know I was getting all this which is what made it such a surprise!

So I had to bribe my son with another toy so I could put the box away until I was ready for the party.  The morning of the party I picked up some donut holes, set out some juice boxes and started setting up everything.  It took almost two hours to open everything and configure it, and of course I had two little helpers!  Now that everything is up though, it takes just seconds to unhook and snap somewhere else.

So anyways, kids started arriving at 10 am and were actually more excited about the Kung Zhu’s than the donuts and juice boxes!  I had kids ranging from 2 years old to 9 years old, mostly girls.  (I will add that that it does warn that it is not a toy for kids under 3.)  The kids automatically went to the table where I lined up all the hamsters and warrior armor and began picking through them.  Once kids had one, we started opening them up, the kids waiting not so patiently!

Finally hamsters were running through the training course and preparing for battle.  The idea is that they will go through the Special Training habitat, and then once they get to the Battle Arena you put on their armor and start battling!  The kids were laughing and loving it when their hamsters started bumping each other, but I think they liked the training better as it is a long to go through.  If you have or saw the first Zhu Zhu pet habitat then you know it is small, especially compared to this new set.  Now you don’t have to use all the pieces, as they do all come separate, but it is definitely more fun to watch the hamsters go through it all!  I would say the whole thing spread out, I have it so the kids can sit in the middle, is about 5×7 feet.  Now you can re-arrange it and configure it differently, but I liked the spread out version.

We partied Kung Zhu style for almost two straight hours and probably would have kept playing but the kids wanted to play outside since it was so nice.  Since then though my boys (2 and 3 years old) have played with the Kung Zhu’s non-stop!  I am amazed how much they are drawn to the set that when my husband suggested moving it, I said no because they love it so much and since it is right by our front door all the neighborhood kids can easily come over and play anytime with it.  As one of the moms said, I won neighbor of the year because I always get all the cool toys!  I have about 15 kids on my block alone and even though I have the youngest kids on the block they all love to hang out over here!

Overall, our Kung Zhu party was a definite hit.  I will admit too that I love watching the hamsters go through the set and I think their warrior armor is adorable, or should I say “manly!”  There is even spots for their little hamster ears to pop through and the armor literally snaps on and off quickly.  I would think a 7 year old, especially boy, would really get into this, but all the kids of different ages here all loved it.  They were not really battling like they should be, but enjoyed it anyways.  I have a feeling the Kung Zhu set will become a permanent fixture in my house, and I am okay with it!  I will warn you though the Kung Zhu armor and cars do have little pieces on it that shoot out, and some have little swords, so if you don’t want your kids to play with those types of items then you may want to check the armor before you buy it or just remove it.   Also, if you don’t have a lot of room, you can definitely piece together a smaller set!

(Some of the happy kids!)
