When I think of how many pens and pencils I throw away every year, I guess I never really thought about them sitting in a landfill somewhere. Until now, there really wasn’t anything I can do other than throw them away once they didn’t work anymore. Well, now Paper Mate is giving moms the power to do something for the environment when they are purchasing school and office supplies.
Paper Mate has come out with a new line of eco-friendly writing utensils, which include biodegradable pens and mechanical pencils. Once you are down with the pen or pencil, you can plant the biodegradable components of the utensil in your backyard. Then if you want to turn it into a family moment, mark the spot where you plant the components and check on it throughout the year to see how the Paper Mate breaks down over time into the soil. Oh and of course the packaging is of course 100% recyclable.
Overall, I think it is awesome of Paper Mate to take the initiative to go the extra step with being eco-friendly. I mean I have heard of eco-friendly packaging before, but not of the actual writing instrument! I am definitely going to bury the pen components when we are done with them and make it a fun little science experiment with my boys.
