Using a store brand formula

Just within the last two months we have two friends who became first time parents.  I remember (barely) coming home with my first child and how many mixed emotions I had.  I was scared, happy, frustrated, frazzled, overjoyed and everything else.  I was the first of our friends to have kids and no one in my family had had a child in a long time, so their advice was a little outdated. 

One area that I was clueless about was baby formula.  I did breast feed (well pumped) as much as I could but I did have to supplement with formula.  I remember going to the store the first time to buy formula and just standing in the baby aisle in awe, who knew there were so many different kinds available!  So I did what I thought was best and bought the name brand formula.  I just thought that store brand formulas were not as good as name brand and I only wanted the best for my baby.

With my second child l compared the formulas and read that store brand formulas are the nutritional equivalent to name brand formulas, not to mention basically half the price!  The FDA passed regulations that ensure all formulas in the U.S. meet the same nutrient specifications to fulfill the needs of infants.  The reason a store brand formula is cheaper is because they are not heavily marketed or advertised and are not given away to hospitals for free.  The cost savings can be as much as $600 according to some estimates.  There also has not been a recall with store brand formulas like the recent Similac recall.  I can’t even imagine the frustration and disgust if I was feeding my son Similac at the time of the recall.
