At What Age Do I Bunk My Boys Beds?

So my boys are 3 and 4 (well he’ll be 3 in a month) and they love sharing a room.  We tried to keep them separate since we have the extra room but they cry because they want to be together.  We purchased their bunk beds on sale when we bought our house two years ago, but obviously because of their age we have yet to bunk them.  I know they would get a big kick out of bunk beds but I worry that they will fall out (or push one another off!)

We just got regular twin size wooden bunk beds with a ladder, although I was amazed at how many different options there are now for bunk beds.  There are ones with a slide, drawers underneath, full size mattresses, desks on the side and even L-shaped bunk beds.  I know something nicer might have been better for when my boys are a little older, but we bought what we could afford and really they don’t need anything fancy!

(Wow this one is nice!)

So I ask what age did you bunk your kids beds?  Did they have any falls or anything else I should worry about?  What about bunk support?  Not that my boys are heavy yet, but I worry about them roughhousing too.

  • My sister and I were about 8 and 9 when we started using bunk beds when we shared a room. It was definitely a fun part of our childhood :)

  • Our boys are 3 years apart and we didn't bunk until the second born was outgrowing the toddler bed. That happened right around the time our third son was born, so it was perfect timing as I wanted to reconvert the toddler bed into the crib. When we did bunk, the older son (who was 5 going on 6) got the top bunk for safety concerns.

  • I waited until our guy was 6, I didn't feel comfortable with him on the top bunk when he was younger. The kids were always horsing around with the ceiling fan, and they are a pain to put sheets on the top bunk.. when he got older, I would have him on top to put the sheet on 2 corner and I would get the other 2 corners.

I think it depends on the boys, and if you are comfortable with it.I like the looks of the L shaped beds, but with our small rooms, it left little play area on the floor.

We did end up later on purchasing sets that have the beds where we can split them up for another room.
