So my mom’s computer is on its last leg and I told her to start thinking about a new one. I think she would be fine with a desktop, which is what she has now, but she is considering a student laptop since there are so many great deals on them now. Well actually the good deals will start in a month or so when they start pushing laptops for college bound kids. Now don’t get me wrong, I love my laptop and couldn’t live without it but I just can’t see my mom using a laptop full time. She struggles using mine because of the size of the screen and keyboard and she is terrible at using the track pad so she’d need a mouse. I also don’t see my mom carrying the laptop anywhere with her other than maybe to another room in the house.
She was considering more of a business laptop since she mainly uses the computer to run her eBay business, but she doesn’t need anything fancy. She basically uses the Internet and Word, and that’s it! While she is computer shopping I also suggested a new printer, not a laser printer or anything fancy, but maybe a regular inkjet 3-in-1 printers. Actually she may even be able to get one free with a laptop purchase since I have seen that special in the past. Whatever she decides I hope she asks me and doesn’t rely on some store associate to steer her in the right direction, since my husband is a computer guy and knows what she really needs!

Suggest that she call HP up and have them build a laptop for her. (You can do this with Dell, but I personally have never had any luck with Dells I have owned.)
I was in the market for a Laptop and spent a day going from store to store trying to find the 'best fit' for me. I even took a Lenovo home, but it turned out not to be the best and I took it back.
So, I called HP up and had them build a machine - 17" LCD Sandy Bridge i3 processor, 500GB drive, 4GB of RAM and a LightScribe DVD burner. The price was so reasonable that I forgot how much I paid for it. Like around $500, maybe???
The best part? You don't have some high pressure salesman looking over your shoulder trying to sell you something. And they aren't trying to unload computers with out of date technology, just because they have been sitting on the shelves and haven't moved.
And I went with one that has a 17" LCD screen. The LCD screen is the same size as the LCD on my iMac. And it has a full numeric keypad, so no more hunting around for numbers.
The one draw back - size. You remember those trays they used to serve food on at your elementary school? Well that's about how big it is.
I should mention I am stalwart Mac user. Given the quality of Apple's products and the fact I have NEVER had a Mac that had to go into shop for anything, but to replace a DVD drive; I am really impressed by their quality. So I am not easily impressed by a Windows machine... And I only bought a Windows machine because I need a Windows machine for handling some programming I do.
But, this computer is pretty nice.
My sister brought her grand-daughter a laptop with Windows Vista. It was a nightmare. So, I was steeling myself for how bad Windows 7 was going to be. And it really isn't as bad as I was afraid off.
Yeah, it takes seven steps to configure the mouse tracking and it only takes one on my Macs. But, I can live with it.
How about getting a small laptop and keeping her keyboard and monitor from her existing computer. She can plug them in and just use the laptop as a desk computer, or unplug it and take it with her. I use a large monitor when I'm doing digital scrapbooking so I can see better. It might be the perfect solution.
