Question: How Old is Too Old for a Sippy Cup?

My boys were off a bottle and onto sippy cups around 9 months old, but ever since then they have not given them up.  They are now 3.5 years old and just turned 5 years old.  My 5 year old will only use the Nuby brand with a straw for a sippy and my younger son will use any sippy.

What amazes me though is that they will drink from a cup at school, restaurant or even at home as long as its not milk.  To my 5 year old milk belongs in a sippy cup and that’s that.

So my question is how did you wean sippy cups and at what age?  I should add I have tried the sippy cups are gone approach and he will then just drink water from a cup but never milk from a cup!

  • I was told that spout sippys can affect a childs bite, but if you use a straw sippy, I don't see anything wrong with it for much older.

    • I heard that too which is why I started them on the straw sippys. I also didn't like the idea of them tipping their heads back to drink all the time!

  • I think as long as they are straw cups, there isn't really a problem. Isn't it better not to have milk spilled all over the house? My kids are 2.5 and 5.5 and both definitely want the milk in their 'milk cups',

  • When you get this one figure out let me know. Every time I give my almost 5 year old a regular cup we always have accidents. I didn't have a problem getting him off the bottle but am having a heck of a time getting my 1 year old off the bottle. We do use the tupperware cups though with covers and they are great...not a lot of parts to clean.

    • I was lucky both of my boys got off sippys around 9 months, although my baby girl is 7 months and I don't want to wean her off the bottle because that means she's growing up!

I think my boys spill on purpose so I put it in a sippy!

  • Our dentist said no bottles, pacifiers, or sippy cups by age two so that's when we quit. She said it caused problems with bite, moved teeth and left deposits on specfic areas of the mouth that are prone to plaque anyway.

It was a pain for about a year with having to clean up spills, though. What helped them was Starbucks' plastic cups with the straw. They're surprisingly well suited for tipping and the kids liked looking like mom and dad with the Starbucks brand.

  • I'm a childcare provider to 2 four year olds and 2 two year olds as well as a Mimi to a four year old & a three year old. Once they reach the age of four I no longer offer a sippy cup but rather a small hand size drinking cup without a lid.
We have very few spills & it makes them feel like big kids!

      • When I first introduced them I made a big deal out of the cups being for the "big" kids. Now my 3 y.o. grandson can't wait to be in that group. I also don't permit the kids to walk around with any sort of food or cups. I have a little table we keep our cups on & as they require a drink they go to the table. This was hard with one set of my siblings I watch as their Dad allows them to carry cups around with them. Everything took a little time but each step of progress I make a big deal out of. Maybe small steps with certain snack times could be a start?
I have to agree with the washing of all the "parts", it's just so easy to have a cup I never lose the lid on.

  • What's so bad about sippy cups. I used them in my daycare for kids older than 5. The tupperware ones with the lid. Less mess when dropped or knocked over.
