iTunes App Review: “Caillou’s World”

Caillou’s World for iPad – Night & Day Studios, Inc.

Updated: February 4, 2012

ABOUT THE APP:

Join Caillou and friends and family as you explore his world and learn about letters, words, spelling and phonics!

In Caillou’s World choose one of the familiar scenes from Caillou’s life (such as his playground, playschool, or attic). At first the scene will be drawn in black outlines just like a coloring book.  As you look around, an element of the scene–a toy, animal, tool, or object–will light up for a moment.  Touch it and try to figure out which letter its name begins with.  Is it A for airplane? What letter does dragonfly start with? Get it right and the item will be filled with color and the scene will begin to be filled in.  If your child guesses the wrong letter, a picture beginning with that letter will appear and they will have a chance to learn another pairing: “Box starts with a B!” and they can simply try again.  The fewer guesses it takes, the more stars you earn.  Once you find and identify six items the entire scene will magically fill in with bright beautiful colors, and your child will be thrilled to discover all the letters and stars they have won! The next time you try that scene, you will see new items, mixed in with the items you had trouble with the time before; the app follows and helps your development while keeping the game fun and the time passing.

Features:

  • 7 different scenes to explore, with big clues and small
  • Over 100 pictures to find and letter pairs to learn
  • For ages 2-4
  • Challenges adapt to your developing skill
  • Original music and a friendly narrator

MY THOUGHTS:

My 5 year old is a Caillou-addict!  So when I saw there was an app I knew we had to have it.  The app starts out with you picking a scene: Playground, Barn, Crosswalk, Egg Hunt, Attic, Gym, or Playschool.  From there you pick a picture that is highlighted and after it says the name of the item, you have to pick what letter the word starts with.  For example, there is a picture of a ladder so you have to pick “L.”  It is full of tons of items and while my son gets to see his favorite character, he also gets to learn new words and letters!  By matching the correct letter you earn stars, which is a fun way to motivate kids.  I do wish there was more though like a reading activity or video clips, or even another game to play.

BUY IT: You can download Caillou’s World for iPad – Night & Day Studios, Inc. for your iPad for $2.99.
