Which House is Yours?

One thing that drives me crazy is when I go to someone’s house for the first time and I can’t find it because they don’t have their address anywhere.  I mean really how am I supposed to know which house is yours if you give me your address but then nowhere on your house (or mailbox) is your house number.  Just the other day I went somewhere and I drove around the block three times before I figured out which house was hers, and I was only able to then because someone else I knew was arriving.

On my own house we have our house number on both sides of our mailbox at the street and on our house to the right of the garage.  Our house numbers are even right under a light on our garage for extra visibility.  I will say though now that I am writing this post I noticed our numbers are not as bright and shiny as they used to be.  A set of brushed nickel house numbers would probably look really sharp but I also have to look for an “N” because yes I have an “N” in our house number.  If you never have guests over then I guess it doesn’t matter but if you do then you need to consider how hard it may be for others not familiar with the area to find your house!

So please tell me does I am not the only one who hates missing addresses!?

  • Not only is it frustrating for visitors, but it's also important for emergency personnel to be able to find your house! If you ever have to call 911 for an ambulance, police, or fire you don't want them to be driving up and down your street looking for the correct house.

  • You are not alone! I can't tell you how many times I've been given directions and got lost because I couldn't tell which house was which; not that they didn't have the numbers, but they were either so expertly hidden or extraordinarily small that they might as well have been nonexistent!

  • In the area I live it is really hard to find addresses on the homes sometimes. I blame that on the HOAs. They have many restrictions about what size, color, and style numbers can be. They restrict where the numbers can be placed. It's really frustrating. We have numbers on the curbs, too, but that really doesn't help when I'm trying to drive, especially at night.
