How Do You Deal With Leaving Your Children? #blogher12

Okay so this morning I leave for BlogHer on a 6am flight. Yes I am crazy. Actually I gave into peer pressure and bought my ticket because that is when everyone else (well like 6 other Chicago bloggers) is flying out. I figured it would be a rough morning but it would save me money and anxiety of flying into New York by myself.

So anyways yesterday as I was packing I couldn’t find my toiletry bag anywhere. I searched everywhere, tore my closet apart and finally came to the conclusion that I was crazy. Then I decided to check under my 5 year old’s bed (which is where he hides things) and low and behold I found my bag.

So I went downstairs and asked him why he hid my bag and he said because he will miss me! This is coming from my 5 year old son who is not my lovey one, I would expect this from my 4 year old but actually he is okay with me leaving. I explained that we can talk on the computer (Facetime) and the phone, and I will bring them back some presents! I also said how they will get 5 days of daddy-time and NeNe and Papa (grandma and grandpa) is going to come over to sleep on the weekend.

Sometimes I will pull the slip out and don’t get noticed approach but since I will be gone for five days I felt the need to prepare them.

So my question to you is: How do prepare your children for you being gone? Slip out? Bribe them?

  • I only get my daughters part time due to the custody agreement, so while I don't leave my girls for trips or vacations, I do go through this scenario and set of emotions 6-10 times a month. The most important thing is to constantly remind them you are only a phone call or text away and that you can't wait to get back home to them. Children are so much stronger than we give them credit for. Enjoy your trip! :-)

  • Aw, I can only imagine leaving children behind on a big trip like this. I personally don't have any kids, but I have no doubt that all the moms out here are having a tough time with this.

The good news is they're going to be in great hands and you'll get to see them before you know it!

    • Thanks! It was definitely a nice trip and glad I didn't miss it, I probably would have regretted it and taken it out on my kids.
