Have a Sandwich, It’s National Bread Month!

In our house, we eat a lot of bread and I mean a lot of bread. We have toast for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch and garlic bread or croutons with dinner. Sandwiches are probably our family’s favorite as there are so many different sandwiches we can make and bread is affordable! My husband is a turkey sandwich lovers, I love my ham and my boys love peanut butter for one and salami for another. I am probably the most boring as I like my sandwish just the meat and the bread, no condiments.

Sandwich Facts:

  • More than a third (41%) of American adults eat sandwiches up to six times a week
  • More than 60% of American adults eat a sandwich at least once per week
  • 86% of adults maintain they would rather spend their lunchtime eating a sandwich than checking Facebook
  • 2012 marks the 250th anniversery of the sandwich
  • The sandwich was invented in 1762 when Sir John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, didn’t want to put his cards down in the midst of a marathon game of poker so he requested his meat be served to him between two slices of bread
  • Americans consume over a billion sandwiches a year, and may in fact be our most popular national dish.
  • 77% of U.S. Adults cite convenience and 59% taste as top reasons they eat sandwiches
  • Sandwiches can provide a complete meal with grains, protein, dairy and veggies (65%)
  • Sandwiches can provide two full servings of grains (26%) and many types of bread are rich in B vitamins, folic acid, iron and fiber (22%)
  • It is recommended that six one-ounce servings of grain foods are eaten each day with at least three servings coming from whole grains.

To celebrate the 250th anniversary of the sandwich and showcase bread as the star that it is during National Bread Month (yes bread has its own month) the Grain Foods Foundation has enlisted celebrity chef and sandwich aficionado Bryan Voltaggio to create four exclusive sandwiches. These sandwiches are made with everyday ingredients and all sound so delicious! They are also ingredients I would have never thought to put together, but I suppose that is the benefit of bread! Bread is just so versatile!

Here are Bryan Voltaggio’s sandwich creations:

The Avocado CLT

The Banana, PB & Honey

The Pastrami Reuben

The Pilgrim

So in honor of National Bread Month, I am going to start working on expanding my sandwich skills and do what I can to spice things up for my family. My son will be taking lunch next year to school and he is a terribly picky eater that I want to start preparing for. He would eat peanut butter sandwiches but with all the peanut allergies in school, I think I’d rather him try something else.
