Fighting Cold Sores This Holiday Season

During the holidays we not only tend to take a lot of pictures in my family but I also see some family members only once a year at Christmastime.  I usually get my hair done, pick up some clothes for myself and my family and try to look my best.  One thing I don’t have time for or want is a cold sore which would really put a kink in my holiday plans.  While a cold sore may only last a short time on my face, it will last a lifetime in the photos we take and I am sure I will hear about the crater on my face throughout the year from my family members.  Yes my family members will not let me live it down and will tease me about a cold sore.

I tend to get cold sores at the worst possible times, like there is ever a good time to get one. I think for me stress is my trigger for a cold sore and of course I am stressed during the holidays.  I used to get them just inside my mouth but lately they have been working their way right outside my lip.  I can’t kiss my kids, I am self-conscience about pictures and certain foods bother me when I eat them.

Some other triggers of cold sores are:

  • Fatigue can drain your immune system and make you easy prey for a cold sore outbreak
  • Cold weather can cause your lips to dry out and bring out a cold sore.
  • Ultraviolet (UV) rays can damage your skin and lead to a cold sore.
  • For women, hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle
  • Trauma to your mouth or lips, like an injury or even dental procedure
  • A fever, a cold or the flu can leave you feeling run down and on the defense against a cold sore outbreak

While I am not one for medicines, a cold sore is something I make an exception for and Abreva is my medication of choice.  Abreva is the only over-the-counter medication approved by the FDA that is proven to shorten healing time of a cold sore.  It is the number one pharmacist recommended over-the-counter cold sore treatment that penetrates deep to the root of your cold sore to heal it fast.  Abreva also blocks the spread of the virus to healthy cells, so it doesn’t keep spreading.  At the first sign of a tingle or little red bump, I dab on some Abreva.  It is so nice that I don’t have to go to the doctor and pay my co-pay just to get a prescription for medicine.  I just run over to my nearest drugstore and in 5-10 days I am all healed.  Before Abreva I had cold sores that seemed to last weeks and weeks with no end in sight.  Now I know at least how long Abreva will work.
