As the oldest of five kids, I constantly had to share my stuff and realize that my mom had other kids to buy for. I admit I as spoiled by my grandma but I deep down knew better that not everyone had everything I had. It is a hard concept for a child though to understand that there is stuff they can do to make a difference. I worry about my own kids growing up and being selfish and spoiled. When they get a little older I will be having us volunteer as a family and maybe even fundraising on our own. For now we donate what we can and I explain to my kids how there are people out there that need help and don’t have even some of the basics let alone all the luxuries of toys and going out for entertainment. I want my children to grow up wanting to make a difference and be inspired.
It is not too often you hear of a young teenager who cares about others so much she has taken matters into her own hands. Lulu Cerone is a 13 year old who at the age of 10 created, organized and excecuted a large-scale fundraiser to help aid the earthquake victims in Haiti. She raised more than $4,000 at that time and has since raised more than $20,000 in her philanthropic efforts through her organization LemonAID Warriors.
Here is a video interview featuring Lulu and her mom Lisa:
Lulu is now inspiring her friends, classmates and community to give back whatever ways they can.
Do you have a tween who wants to give back? Through June 9th, Monster High will give Philanthro-party hosts an opportunity to win $1,000 to donate to the cause of their choice. For more information, visit Ghouls Helping Ghouls.
