Talking to Kids About Drugs and Medicine Safety

Millennium Health is partnering with the Mark Wahlberg Youth Foundation for the Drop Them Off campaign, designed to educate parents and youth about how to safely use, store and dispose of prescription medications to prevent their misuse. With spring around the corner, it’s the perfect time to take your spring cleaning a step further and make sure you clean out the medicine cabinet too. 2/3 of teens who abuse pain relievers said they get them from family members and friends.

Research shows that children who learn a lot about the risks of drugs from their parents are significantly less likely to use drugs than kids who don’t get this information at home. But, only 14% of teens indicate they’ve discussed with a parent the misuse or abuse of any type of prescription drug.

Parents can use the Talk Kit to start a conversation, learn what to say and how to answer tough questions.

They can also take three simple steps to help reduce access to prescription drugs, too:

o Don’t share prescription medicines

o Securely store them

o Properly dispose of them in the trash or at a drug take-back center

This is one topic I do speak with my kids about and they tell me about kids who have used drugs at their young ages from school. So important and I wish the schools would also help to talk to them so nobody misses the message about it
