Ever have one of those days when you need to see a doctor but just don’t have the time or maybe your doctor doesn’t have hours that suit your needs. For me I tend to get sick on the weekends or after hours when my doctor is not in. Sure I could go to the Emergency Room or even an Urgent Care Center, but the costs of those are ridiculous sometimes and there is usually a lot of waiting around. As a mom of three I don’t have time to get sick let alone wait around in some waiting room. Well I apparently am not alone and luckily technology has evolved with today’s needs.
Now there is Telehealth offered by American Well, also known as Amwell, which allows for reliable and convenient doctor visits at any time with trained and certified physicians. Whether it be a minor illness or injury, symptom from a chronic condition or just a general health and wellness concern, American Well is a simple and affordable service that is offered.
Here are a few reasons people go online to see a doctor:
- I feel like I should probably see a doctor, but can’t really fit it into my over-booked schedule.
- I’m flying tomorrow and can’t get out of work.
- It’s difficult for me to get a doctor’s appointment.
- I’m not sure if I should go to the ER or not.
- My doctor’s office is closed and I don’t want to go to an urgent care clinic or hospital
- I just moved and don’t know any doctors in my area.
- I just need a second opinion.
- I’m between jobs and have no coverage.
- I have a question about a loved-one’s health and would like some advice.
And here are some of the most common conditions that can be diagnosed and treated online:
- Bronchitis
- Cough
- Sinus infection
- Sore throat
- Urinary tract infection
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Fever
- Pinkeye
- Flu
- Sprains and strains
- Cold
- Respiratory Infection
- Headache
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Weight concerns
- Smoking Cessation
Amwell appointments are scheduled for 10 minutes – the amount of time needed to handle most medical issues – but you can of course add more time if needed. Once you connect to a doctor via online or mobile app, the doctor you choose will review your history, answer your questions and at their discretion diagnose, treat and even prescribe medication. If you are prescribed something, it can even be send straight to your pharmacy.
Worried the doctors are not in the US? Actually that was something I worried about but luckily Amwell uses a national network of US-based clinicians. All the doctors you see are licensed to practice medicine in your state.
Amwell is a private, secure, HIPAA-compliant tool that allows for a safe and confidential consultation with a doctor. It is covered by some insurance companies, if your insurance company doesn’t cover telehealth you can still use the service. The cost of a visit is $49 for a 10-minute consultation.
I honestly love the idea of using telehealth, especially via a mobile app. I could definitely squeeze 10 minutes in for an appointment while sitting in the parking lot while my son practices soccer for example or late at night after my kids finally all go to bed. The cost of just $49 is not much more either than what I’d pay if I went and saw my regular doctor and the convenience would definitely be worth it. I would say I am anxious to use Amwell but then again I hope I don’t have a reason to, either way though I love that the option is available.
