Did you know that prostate cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer related death in the United States? 1.2 million biopsies a year lead to 240,000 prostate cancer diagnoses and 30,000 deaths. Honestly I had no idea it was up there. Basically prostate cancer is to men what breast cancer is to woman (yes I know men can also have breast cancer, but I’m just using it as an example.) Since women are usually the health care leaders in the home, we as women should know about something so deadly that could affect the men in our lives, right?
Honestly my husband would probably never go to the doctor or refill a prescription unless he is sick, he just doesn’t think about his health and just assumes I am taking care of everything on the backend, which I do. I make the appointments, file the claims and give him a list of questions to ask at his annual checkup, but I had no clue about prostate cancer. I want my husband to live a long life with me and want the knowledge to help him do that.
Now that I know the statistics surrounding prostate cancer I want to be proactive about it for my husband. So I’ve done the research and made mental notes for when he should be concerned about it. While some doctors suggest waiting for testing until a man is in his 50s there is a genetic test available.
Prolaris is a genetic test for prostate cancer from Myriad Genetics Laboratories that combines traditional risk factors with molecular assessment. It is the only test that measures how fast prostate cancer cells are diving. Then the information can be used to develop a treatment plan which will vary according to the results.
