Recently my husband’s grandma was diagnosed with cancer for the third time and she decided she didn’t want to fight it this time. She is a strong woman but sooner than later she will loose that battle.
It got me thinking though how really any of us could get sick or injured and not be able to work, it doesn’t just happen to the elderly. What if my husband got diagnosed with something and couldn’t work or was injured – he is the breadwinner in our household. I honestly don’t even know what our current insurance covers as he switched jobs recently and had to sign up quickly for insurance.
Well luckily fall marks open enrollment season for most U.S. companies and it is a good time to review benefit offerings and health policies. When it was just my husband and I we had a lot less insurance than we do now that we are caring for three children. One-size-fits-all benefits options aren’t enough for my family anymore.
Selecting the right health care benefits is an important decision that many Americans actually do very little research to learn which plans and products are the best for them. A survey found that 34 percent of employees spent 15 minutes or less researching their benefit options in 2014. I know I don’t want to find out the hard way that my family didn’t have the protection we needed.
