What do do-it-yourselfers have that others don’t? They have a “can do” attitude. If you tell yourself you can do something, are willing to put in a little time to learn, and have a computer, you can do things around the home without having to call a professional. Before you say you can’t, give it a try!

The laundry room

There is nothing exciting about a laundry room, it is what it is, or is it? With a little creativity you can turn your laundry into a more functional and cool space. Make visible areas around and behind the washer and dryer look clean by installing tile. There are many tile products on the market that require no cutting. Being form fitting, all you need to do is measure the space and buy the right size tile. Many mosaics offer you the flexibility of not having to cut into the tile, just the netting that keeps the tile together. A simple project, it shouldn’t take you more than half a day, but the results are amazing.

Change your faucets

To update your bath, try changing out your faucets to replace them with a fancier and newer version. If you think it requires a professional, think again. To replace a faucet all you have to do is shop for the same type of faucet that currently fits in the space, and with a couple of connections, you have transformed your bath. It really is that simple. There are hundreds of YouTube videos that will walk you through the steps of removing and replacing you faucet fixtures. Likely all you will need is a wrench, some plumbers tape, and the patience to take your time and learn something new.

A tub overhaul

Not everyone is a fan of a tub surround, but how do you make that old tub look new again? Try putting fabricated stone around the tub to add texture and to make your bath look more like a spa retreat. With some adhesive and a good eye, you can add stones starting at the bottom and reaching the top, to transform the entire bath. The key? Make sure to measure the space and purchase stone sizes that will fit without having to be cut. There are so many cool products on the market, you can really get creative and design a masterpiece for your bathroom space.

Change outdated light fixtures

Sure, you aren’t an electrician, but for a simple light fixture change you don’t have to be. If you aren’t color blind and you know where your electrical box is, you can change out any light in your home. Make sure that you have cut the power supply to the fixture before attempting this one. YouTube has an abundance of self-help videos to guide you through the exchange. If you think that may be a little above your pay grade, try just replacing the glass on some of your light fixtures. Since old is back in, add Edison light bulbs to your old fixtures, or switch out the lamp shades. You will be astonished by the instant appeal created.

Plank ceilings

There is nothing that gives texture and ambiance more than a planked ceiling. If you have old popcorn ceiling or stains from water leaks since repaired, this is the perfect way to disguise them with little effort. Just about every home improvement store sells what is called tongue and groove planks. What is excellent about this product is that it is a no-brainer. All you have to do is snap the pieces together for an instant ceiling cover. Rent a table saw and you can transform any room in one afternoon. It doesn’t take much skill to cover up those ugly ceilings effectively.

The more you do around your home, the more knowledge you will gain, and the more confidence you will build. Many home improvement projects are not rocket science, they just take some tools, a lot of patience, and some can do attitude on your part.
