The other day I heard my very active daughter tell her friend that she looks fat. She is 5 years old and her ribs are showing. Now I continued listening and didn’t hear anything else so I figured she was just playing a game, but it definitely made me stop. I mean how can a 5 year old feel fat? Next, she’ll feel ugly. I forget how fragile it is to be a young, impressionable girl. Now as a mom of three I honestly feel pretty comfortable and nothing really bothers me but I remember being worried I wasn’t as pretty and smart as the other girls.

As daughters grow, their relationships with family and friends can influence them both positively and negatively. It is extremely important, especially as a parent, to share positive ideas, values and beliefs. Even as older women, we experience the same pressures with our own appearance, looks, size and shape but it is important not to stress about it in front of our daughters. I mean there are days I feel fat or look frumpy but I try my best not to say anything about it in front of my kids. Its not something that should concern them or even give them an idea to think about.

Here is a selfie I took with my daughter fresh out of the shower with no makeup to show that its okay to be natural! I try to do this regularly to show her that I am comfortable in my skin and she should be as well. Sure I do wear makeup but I am usually a more light makeup person and its just Dove lotion with some eye makeup. I also try to never hide from pictures being taken of me.

Keeping up ones appearance though keeps some girls from being their best selves, affecting their health, friendships and even performance at school.
