I partnered with this brand in exchange for sharing my honest opinion.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of S.O.S Steel Wool Soap Pads. Try to imagine how different the world was when S.O.S pads first came out. Electricity and indoor plumbing were considered luxuries, women didn’t have the right to vote, Pablo Picasso was in his artistic prime, just to name a few of the headlines. The average American home cost around $6,000 and women stayed at home as housewives.
A cooking utensil salesman invented S.O.S pads as a way for his customers to keep their new pans shining bright. He found that by dipping steel wool balls into a hand-grade liquid soap and drying them out, that they would “Save Our Saucepans” (yes that is what S.O.S stands for.)
Gotta love this ad from Ladies Home Journal from the 1930’s:
Just think of all the magic the S.O.S pads have worked in the past 100 years. Houses today are still scrubbed inside and out with those pads. S.O.S pads remain a cleaning staple for millions of people across the country, usually kept under the sink for those hard-to-clean surfaces. Even though you wouldn’t think you can improve upon a soap pad, the S.O.S pads have evolved to include sponges, various cleaning duty sponges and of course non-scratch scrubbers.
Did you know though that other than pots and pans, S.O.S pads are perfect for shower walls, stovetops, patio furniture, outdoor grills and more?
Here are some uses from the S.O.S website – you can even view videos of the pads in action!
You know how your parents give you advice and it may go in one ear and out the other? Well for me, I am glad the advice of using S.O.S. pads stuck with me. I have used them in our home ever since we bought our first home and they are quite the handy tool. A scrubber that scrubs without damage and has soap built-in? Sold! I actually like to keep a bag in my kitchen, upstairs bathroom and garage. They truly are a versatile cleaner and at the price of them, you really can’t go wrong! I recommend too buying extra as it is rough when you need one and realize you are out of them!
WIN IT: (1) US winner will receive a S.O.S Prize Pack
