Purchasing the perfect mattress can be an investment in your time, your money and the quality of your sleep. You can keep your mattress in top shape – and your valuable warranty in good standing – by taking steps to protect your mattress.
Aside from doing your best to avoid spills and accidents, the best thing you can do for your mattress is to purchase a mattress protector.
Waterproofing: It may come as a surprise that even a little fluid/liquid stain or damage to your mattress will void your warranty on most mattresses. This means that even if your mattress ends up with a defect, you will not be covered and will be responsible for any replacement/repairs on your own.
This is why choosing a waterproof mattress protector is crucial if you want to keep your warranty in good standing and your bed protected from liquid damage. Accidents and spills can happen easily and quickly. Avoiding them with a protector will help keep your mattress clean and safe for longer.
Prevent Allergies: People who suffer from asthma or allergies rely on mattress protectors to protect their beds from dust mites, mildew and other allergens that can trigger medical issues. Often these protectors are hypoallergenic, some are even hospital grade.
Keep Bed Bugs Away: Bed bugs are tiny parasitic insects that feed on blood. They can sneak into different places in your house – like your bed – and bite you at night. There are mattress protectors on the market that completely seal off your mattress from the outside world. These will come in handy if you are worried about bed bugs. If you think you may have a bed bug infestation, you’ll want to get them dealt with as soon as possible before they become a huge health hazard. To do this you’ll want to hire an expert extermination company that offers Discreet Bed Bug Inspections.
Temperature Control: Thanks to advancements in technology, you can now purchase mattress protectors that help keep you cool at night. Some have built-in technology that will pull heat away from your body and re-distribute it throughout the night. Others are made with moisture-wicking properties to help you avoid waking up with night sweats.
Added Comfort: While the primary reason to get a mattress protector is to prevent damage and to increase its longevity, many protectors are now made with comfortable fabric and in thicknesses that almost mimic mattress pads. These can do double duty by protecting your mattress and adding a level of comfort to your bed.
Fortunately, there are a lot of great protectors available. They come in a variety of fabrics, including cotton, polyester, down and spandex. They traditionally come in three types:
Encasement: Encasement mattress protectors fit all six sides of the mattress. These are the ones that most likely have options to completely seal away your mattress from the outside environment. Encasement mattresses tend to be a good fit for those with allergies, asthma or are concerned about large accidents and/or bed bugs
Fitted: Fitted mattress protectors go on your mattress just like a fitted sheet. These protectors mainly protect the top of your mattress from fluid/liquid, if they are made with waterproof material.
Elastic: The elastic mattress protector lays on top of your mattress, while elastic straps wrap around the corners to keep it in place.
When deciding which type to go with, consider what your needs are. Do you or someone you sleep with have frequent accidents or drink a lot in bed? Do you live in an apartment or house that has a history of bed bugs? Deciding what to prioritize will help guide you in your decision-making.
Also, make sure to purchase a protector whose depth is close to the thickness of your mattress. If you get a mattress protector that is too large, you will have extra material hanging off the sides of your bed and it will cause shifting and noise under your sheets.
Finally, you don’t have to break the bank with a mattress protector. There are simple, waterproof protectors available for around $20 that will add a layer of protection over your bed. The more features and technology added to a protector, the more expensive they will be.

We have a mattress encasement and it has worked great for us. It's really made our mattress last a long time!
Our mattress protectors have saved us so many times
I've always been reluctant to get a mattress protector because the ones i've seen before make an annoying plastic rustling sound when you roll on them. Perhaps I should check out a more modern one, would probably be cheaper than getting new mattresses every few years!
