Have you ever wondered how well babies see as they grow? I remember my pediatrician saying how baby vision is blurry at the start and sees only in black and white. Then as the baby grows their vision gets sharper and they start to see colors. I admit I also wondered what I look like (along with other things) to my kids as babies. How do they recognize that it’s me?
Well Vision Direct, Europe’s largest online retailer of eyewear, has launched an interactive tool called ‘How well do babies see’? The tool was designed by expert opticians to show how normal eyesight develops over the first year. Parents just slide over the tool to select their child’s age. I love how the tool gives parents the opportunity to understand their baby’s vision, depth perception, and color awareness.
Vision Direct’s tool showing a newborn’s vision. A newborn sees shapes, light and movement, but only in shades of gray.
Vision Direct’s tool showing a baby’s vision at 6 months. A 6-month-old baby can move her eyes quickly to follow moving objects and is beginning to understand object permanence.
Vision Direct’s tool showing a baby’s vision at 10 months. At 10 months old, a baby’s eyes will be the color that they’ll stay when she’s grown up; give or take a shade or two.
Check out Vision Direct’s tool to see! It is pretty interesting to see how much vision changes as babies grow and how important healthy eye development is.
