A Home Is More Than Just The Four Walls You See

The four walls that you might be used to staring at are not the only walls that you have to stare out. Your home is your oyster, and you can do whatever you want to it, whenever you want. Well, that might be an exaggeration, we can’t turn our homes into a mansion with an indoor swimming pool and a cinema room. But what we’re trying to say is that you can do so much more with your home than be unhappy with the way it is at the minute. Or wishing that you lived somewhere else.

Every single home, no matter what the shape or size, has potential that can be used, and should be used. It’s not even about the design or the layout of your home, there’s so much more to it that we want to explore today. You home is the biggest investment in your life, so you might as well invest a bit more of your time and your money making sure that you feel completely comfortable and happy with the home you do have. We’re not going to suggest too many drastic changes, but we might suggest one or two things that are a little radical! So, without further ado, stop being bored of the same four walls, and spice up your home in order to spice up your life.

Finding That Comfort Factor

So, picture this. You’ve had the most stressful day at work. Your boss has been screaming at you, you split your lunch down your nice white top, your car needs fuel which took you an extra 20 minutes to get home. It’s basically been a nightmare day. You come home and you remember that the dishes haven’t been done, there’s no dinner in the fridge, and hardly any money in the bank. The first thing that you want to do is break down and cry, and you probably do that. We won’t judge you. Because the second thing you want to do is sit down in either your bedroom or the sofa, have a glass of wine to cool down, and evaluate the tasks ahead of you. But you can’t because you’re so cold from the heating just isn’t working the way you want it to, and the air conditioning really is being only air conditioning, even though it’s meant to keep you toasty. You’re back to break down and cry mode.

If you want the comfort factor to really be there in your home, you need to make sure everything is working perfectly for you to come home to. If your unit is only blowing out cold air, get 24 Hour AC Repair to come out and fix it. If it is only blowing out hot air and you need cold, then again, get on the blower.

The four walls we find ourselves looking at on a daily basis are usually four walls ridden with problems. But, the sooner we find solutions to our problems, the sooner we can introduce the real comfort factor. We’re talking a brand new furniture suite for the living room. We think a fabric sofa is better because it’s something you can really sink into, without having to worry about it being freezing cold. You have to try and get yourself a recliner one as well. They’re just so comfy, and it really does bring that chill factor for the rest of your home. As for the rest of the home, it’s up to you to go around and find what makes you comfortable in each room, we think the warmer and more snuggly a room is, the better. Obviously, minus the kitchen, that needs to be modern and full of technology!

Smells Are Everything

Smells have more of an influence on our moods than you might have ever realized. If feeling stressed and struggling to sleep, lavender can help soothe your mood and send you off to the land of nod. If you’re feeling low on energy, smells such as lemon can really help bring a fresh feeling to you, and you might just feel as though you can get up and go to the gym after all. But more importantly, the better your home smells, the more inviting it’s going to be to your guests. You should think about getting some plugin scents filled with oil, and put one in every room.

You really can get a variety of different smells, so you could even change as the seasons go on. Pumpkin for Autumn, cinnamon for winter, and refreshing smells for summer, such as lemon. You should also think about filling your bedroom with candles. Candles are so relaxing to have in the bedroom, and not only does the smell help you to fall asleep, but the gentle glow of the candlelight!

Obviously, don’t leave them burning through the night, but do help them to induce a sense of relaxation and calm! We don’t want to be crude, but the bathroom is one room in the home that can get a little smelly. So, to make sure it stays as fresh as possible at all time, have one of the motion activated scent sprays in the room. They look really nice, and every so often they will squirt out some air freshener into the air. They’ll also be activated when someone walks past!

Space To Work With

If the one reason why you feel as though you’re getting sick of looking at the same four walls is because you don’t like the space that you’ve got, then you’ve got two options here. Option number one is to get rid of some of the things that might be causing you to have a lack of space. If you have a small kitchen with a dining room next to it, but a big kitchen table as well, then think about getting rid of the kitchen table. The space will open up, and it’ll be like you’ve got a brand new kitchen all over again. Trust us, we know how horrible it is to try and work in a tiny kitchen.

This goes for any of the other rooms in your home. If you find that you have unnecessary furniture lying around, then you really should think about removing some of it to open up some space. If not, then at least try moving things around to see if a better layout can give you more space. You would be surprised at how much room opens up when you simply switch your bed to face the other way!

Your section option is to figure out whether an extension would be on the cards, which is should definitely be. As long as you can get the planning permission for it, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t think about extending, because the possibilities would be endless. You could have another bedroom, bathroom, a bigger kitchen etc. You don’t even have to knock your house down to do something like this, you could always just have a conservatory installed. Plenty of extra room, and half the hassle!

Don’t Ignore Your Decor

Decor is the statement of your home. It’s what makes it what it is, and to know that you’re not fully happy with your decor must be one of the most annoying things in the world. Luckily for you, it’s not hard to change decor, and it’s not hard to find out what the current trends are. If you go onto websites such as Pinterest, and just type in decor, you will be bombarded with thousands of different thumbnails showing you different design ideas. If you don’t take note of the items in the pictures, at least take notice of the color schemes being used, and how they’ve used them.

The color scheme of your home really does define what it is. If you got for something light and bright, then you’re going for a home that’s more awake, alive, and full of energy. If you go for a color scheme that’s darker, such as grey, then you’re going for that relaxing and calm vibe, one that a lot of people are looking for at the minute. The main thing you need to be doing, is making sure that you’re keeping up to date and on top of it. If you’re leaving your decor for years without doing nothing to it, then you’re running the risk of your home looking as though it’s in poor condition. It doesn’t take long to decorate either, so take some time to consider whether your time has come to try something new!

Go For Gold

Finally, if you’re going to go for gold, you need to think big. We’re talking moving house altogether. If you know full well that you’ve tried all of the options above, and you’re still bored of the same four walls that you see, then it’s probably time to move on to a new home. The choices out there are endless, you just need to make sure you find a home worth moving to!

  • I would love to just move. We have been here 30 years and the neighborhood has gone to the dogs. I detest living here sometimes. For now, we make the best of it.

  • This is great advice. You rarely see a common sense article about decorating. Thanks for posting!

  • This is all so true, and sometimes you get so accustomed to how you have things, you don't think "outside the box," and don't notice the decor, the smells, etc. It is especially important, too, if you want to sell. I've been in places where the dog smell was so bad I could not even look, also cigarette smoke, one you could smell the musty basement before opening the front door! I bet none are even aware of it. I remember some homes smelled so fresh I wanted to know their secret! Nice pillows can help make your home decor more comfy and attractive, too.
