5 of the Best Travel Destinations for Kids Who Love History

It’s true that travel broadens the mind, as it allows us to experience different cultures and take a step back from our everyday lives. As adults, that’s important, but it’s even more important when we take our children along with us. A great vacation will stay with your child for a lifetime, so it’s important to find a destination that fits in with their interests. If your kids love history and exploring the past, here are five perfect travel choices which are sure to be a hit.

1. New York

The history of New York City is in many ways the history of America itself, as we see it change from its Native American beginnings, through Dutch ownership as New Amsterdam, before being captured by the British and finally being liberated and growing rapidly as an independent city like no other. New York is full of historic sites that bright kids will love, from the Empire State Building to the dinosaur-laden American Museum of Natural History.

2. Masada

Israel is a fascinating country that has a rich, if at times turbulent, history. The Dead Sea resorts and the Mediterranean coastal resorts are fantastic places for sun lovers to explore, and contrary to what you may have read, they’re safe for tourists of all ages. If your child loves history, however, then you really must take them to Masada. The Masada history story is one of faith, love, and sacrifice, and a tour of the ancient fortress is both moving and informative.

3. York

England is full of wonderful historic places to visit, from Royal Windsor to Bath, ancient Stonehenge, not to mention the many delights in the capital city of London. York in the north of England, however, is a must-see destination for history buffs. It’s museums explore the city’s past under Roman and then Viking rule, and you can still walk around the city via the Roman walls built nearly 2,000 years ago. There’s also a Chocolate museum for those with a sweet tooth, as well as a museum dedicated to the villainous King Richard III.

4. Paris

Paris is the number one most popular destination for American tourists traveling abroad, and once you’ve visited you’ll understand why. There’s a huge amount for people of all ages to see and enjoy, but children especially will love destinations such as the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame Cathedral. A cruise along the River Seine is especially recommended, and your tour guide will point out the many fascinating historical facts along the way.

5. Stonehenge

The ancient stone circle of Stonehenge in Wiltshire has fascinated people for centuries. It’s believed to date back more than 5,000 years, which leaves us asking how such a huge monument was built by our primitive ancestors, and just as importantly, why it was built. There are great travel destinations for history loving kids across the globe: from Stonehenge to Paris and Masada, and from New York to old York. There’s so much to explore in all these destinations and many more. Encouraging a love of history and learning in your children is one of the best gifts you can give them.

  • You have selected some great places to travel to. We always read up on the local/state information and historical sites. It's so important to show our children how America was started. If you are lucky enough to travel to some of the other countries you mentioned. There is a lot of history there for sure. We have been to London and want to go back to see what we didn't get to see. I love traveling. Thank you for bringing this to us. It's really interesting.

  • We just got back from a trip to New York City. Amazing city with lots of history to explore like the Tenement Museum.
