Tips on Teaching Your Kids Spirituality

Currently, not all parents impart matters of spiritually to their children. It could be either a matter of lack of belief in the importance of that aspect or merely something that falls at the bottom of the pile when it comes to life lessons. When that happens, children will go around life picking cues of what spirituality from around them. A skylight will remind them of an image they saw that shows light from heaven shining down on a person. They will have vague ideas, but nothing solid

If you incorporate spirituality into your child’s life, you are better doing it early. They will ask tough questions, but remember that it is part of their learning. Talking about their spirituality also makes them curious about the world. When they hear about the things happening in their city, they will come to see things are more complicated than good or bad. Also, giving kids something more substantial than themselves to believe in makes them conscious that they have a purpose beyond the tangible realm.

Allowing them to chart their path

The reality stands that the world is not as religious as it once was. Even though that is the case, create the awareness that spirituality is a part of life. Without telling them what direction to take (allow them to conclude it themselves. It might be uncomfortable for you as they go through the exploration phase, but you can always keep a watchful eye to avoid radicalization of any kind.

The caveat here is that if you already have a spiritual practice, with or without a religion-affiliated to it, it is likely that you will influence your children to follow you. However, even as you do so, allow them to discover the boundaries of spirituality so they can personalize it. The reason why one in six Americans has no affiliation to any religion is that most did not come to own the practices or religion they saw as children through their parents. If you are keen to create an impact, invest in their discovery without stifling them.

Focus on universal principles as well

Across all religions and spiritual practices, there are commonalities that even those who don’t practice either live by. Aspects such as kindness, collaboration, respect authorities, and others cut across and need no pretext to teach. You want as they grow up to show them the interconnectedness of the world. Why is that important? Spirituality and religions have been divisive for millenniums; you don’t want your children to continue the same. Instead, teach them to be open-minded and respectful of everyone despite their affiliation. Also, show them we have more in common than we do think.
