How to Make Your Home More Energy-Efficient

Furnaces and air conditioners draw a lot of energy from the electric grid. In fact, studies show that heating and cooling bills account for almost half of a home’s utility bills. Whether your goal is to cut your energy bill or just do your part to avert the climate crisis, start with an energy audit. Once you determine energy inefficiencies, you can tackle the improvement projects to address the issues.

Patch up air leaks to improve efficiency

One of the fastest ways to lower utility bills is to find and fix gaps and drafts near windows, doors, light fixtures, switches, and outlets. Eliminating air leaks can save as much as 20% on your heating and cooling bills. Once you’ve determined where air leaks are located, apply caulk, foam insulation, or weather stripping to seal the gaps.

Keep the temperature comfortable

Direct sunlight limits the need for artificial lighting indoors, but can also contribute to higher indoor temperatures and drastically increase air conditioning bills. It’s a good idea to maximize cooling efficiency by blocking a portion of the summer heat from entering windows.

Enjoy natural light

Unfortunately, using curtains or blinds blocks the natural light. The experts at City Seamless Patio Covers recommend installing a pergola, awning, or covered patio that blocks incoming solar radiation while still enjoying the benefits of natural light. Customizing the angle of the structure or latticework allows homeowners to receive more light in winter than in summer.

Smart home automation can save you money

Everyone has a few bad habits that contribute to high utility bills. You may be surprised how easy it is to change behavior by installing a few smart home devices. Figure out which lights and electronics use the most power in your home by reviewing the EnergyGuide labels attached at purchase. Install timers or use a smart assistant like Alexa to program devices to shut down.

Many appliances never really turn off

If you have a rarely used TV on standby, it will draw more energy than if it’s off. Use the TV main menu to change the settings so the TV powers all the way down in between uses. Or maybe you find a light switch powered on most of the day. Install motion detectors on light switches to turn the lights on and off when people enter the room.

Use off-peak energy for home chores

Most utilities charge more during peak hours, so using your dishwasher and washing machine at night can cost you less. As a benefit, using appliances at night requires the air conditioner to compensate for less than it would during the day. Most modern appliances have delay timers that can be set after evening temperatures have cooled off, or you can simply add soap and start the washer as you head to bed.

Audit your energy use regularly

Limiting energy waste is a great way to save the planet and stash a few more dollars in your wallet. Invest in a few simple DIY projects to patch energy leaks and take advantage of modern appliance conveniences to run them at off-peak hours. The investment will pay for itself, and you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you’re combating climate change.
