Preparations For Your Kid’s Prom

Prom is an exciting night for kids, but a nightmare for parents. You want them to enjoy a positively memorable night yet protect them from the irrational decisions you know they might very well take. Because, let’s face it, we have made those decisions before and it took us a long time to learn from them and move on. Whether you are involved in preparing for the actual event or not, you still need to get things in line for your child without sounding like the overprotective parent they would roll their eyes away from. So, here goes the ultimate guide to subtly assist your kid on prom night without the uncalled for fights.

1. Have the talk:

The best advice comes in disguise. Plan ahead, preferably months before prom night, to have spontaneous talks with your teen about your limits. Nothing is off the table when it comes to talking about their safety and sensible choices. From peer pressure, to self-confidence, to drinking, and getting physical. But remember to talk more like an old friend rather than the strict parent who wants his/her rules followed. Keep it casual, subtle, and continually remind your teen about how much you trust their judgement and respect their decisions.

2. Choose the outfit:

Every kid has a vision of how he or she wants to look on prom night. Your job is to make that vision come to life as long as it’s not too outrageous and manageable within your budget. Enjoy the fact that your kid wants to involve you in choosing their look and work from there. Be positive, kind, and supportive. A great tip here is to come from a positive body image place where you would praise their unique features and body frame. At this age, like we once were, they are very sensitive and self-conscious towards their body shape that they don’t need any additional shaming when it comes to their physical appearance.

3. Plan the ride:

Limos are a solid tradition when it comes to prom night. You can surprise your teen with booking one. You should look for a Limo Rental service that offers limousines and party buses that your kid can enjoy with their date or their friends. Plus, having a limo ready to pick up your graduating senior would rule out the driving option they would insist on. Always provide an exciting alternative rather than refusing the idea altogether. And don’t forget to plan for pick up arrangements, it is much safer to have a parent or you pick them up than getting in the car with drunken friends who were allowed to drive. A limo find deal though is a great find!

4. Check-in measures:

Establish how you want to check-in on your kid. What do you expect from them? To call you or answer you? What will you do if you don’t hear from them? You have to stress on the fact that if your request is ignored you would have to drop in yourself and they sure don’t want that to happen. Also, it is better to have contacts for other parents, your kids friends, and whoever involved in the organization of prom night just in case. And it goes without saying that you need to know where the afterparty would take place and secure a contact or more there in case of an emergency.

Prom happens only once!

Let your kid celebrate the grown-up feeling and enjoy the transition into adulthood with your heart and mind at peace. Have the necessary talk to lay down subtly your ground rules, help them pick the outfit they have been envisioning, plan their magical limo ride, and secure emergency contacts for a night that both of you will remember forever.
