Prepare Your House for a Serious Makeover

Whether you are planning to slap a bit of paint around the walls or you are going all out and completely reconfiguring your space and getting the builders in, you need to fully prepare your house for a proper makeover. You don’t want your stuff to get in the way or get damaged!

If you are planning to continue living in your home while it is redone, you will also need to think carefully about how that will work. Eating takeaway food is great for a while but you won’t want to be crammed into a single room for too long!

Packing and Storing

It’s always easiest to redecorate in an empty room so removing as much stuff as possible is highly recommended. If you aren’t doing the whole house, you might be able to fit your things into another room but you could always look up storage centres to see if you could keep your stuff safe off-site.

This is actually a great chance to go through your things and do a bit of organizing too. Get rid of the stuff you don’t need or haven’t used for a while. Keep anything that will fit with the new design you’re going for as your interior designer may be able to make use of them later on.

Cleaning

You might be about to make a huge mess but it’s still really important that you give your house a good clean before you start. You should definitely clean your walls before you paint, dusting them down and removing any spider’s webs that might have built up. This is important as it will ensure a smooth finish once you’re done.

Sweeping up and removing any rubbish is also important throughout the makeover. You must make sure that the space is as easy to work in as possible and cleaning as you go makes good sense.

Where to Stay

The most logical thing to do while your house is in chaos is to check into rented accommodation for a week or two until the house is livable again! However, if you want to save some money, you might be better staying in one room while the rest of the house is down and then moving back and doing that room last. But living on a building site isn’t easy.

Until your kitchen is done, you should look at safe ways to cook. A microwave is the obvious answer and there are plenty of recipes you can use. While takeaways for a few nights might be okay, do remember that this will cost a significant amount. You may also need to think about your bathroom needs. It might be that you have to stay with a relative for a few days if you want access to a shower!

Doing a serious makeover is a great way to reinvent your house but don’t underestimate how difficult it can be. This will be a trying time but the more prepared you are the easier it will be. And, you know it will be worth it in the end!
