What Makes Homes Unhealthy?

The home is the nest of your family. However, despite your efforts to build a welcoming and safe environment, most homes may not be as healthy as they appear to be. Indeed, did you know that experts can link the household to a variety of health complaints, from the seasonal cold to more serious mental health problems? The typical home can affect your family’s health in many ways, even though you may not notice it at first. From creating an environment that encourages germ spreading – you are more likely to catch a cold at home than outside – to aggravating the threats of a sedentary lifestyle, your home needs to be at the heart of your health. Here are some tips to make your household a haven of health.

Presence of toxins and pollutants

Invisible particles of toxins live inside your home. They come from your ventilation system, your furniture, your patins, your chemical products, etc. While you can’t see them, they accumulate in the indoor air and can affect your health. Indoor pollution can build a favorable terrain for lung and respiratory infections, asthma issues, allergic responses, and even migraines. You need to make deep cleaning a habit in your household to keep harmful particles at bay. Rug cleaning, for instance, needs to become a regular occurrence throughout the year – at least once a year – to get rid of unpleasant odors and invisible toxins. You can also buy dedicated air filtering devices to clean the indoor air.

High energy waste

Your home insulation plays a central role in your hole. Indeed, a house that lets the cold air in, for instance, is likely to be hard to heat in winter. Poor insulation can not only affect your immune system – as your body needs to constantly fight to maintain its temperature –, but also the environment. Typically, without the support to professional home contractors to repair roof leaks or change the insulation, your home is going to drive a high energy waste and carbon footprint. Unfortunately, your carbon footprint is closely linked to the survival of the planet in the long term, meaning that your house could be depleting the earth from its natural resources.

Hectic lifestyle

Life has become incredibly fast-paced. Most of us pack our days with a tight professional schedule. We are not strangers to hard work and long hours. Unfortunately, because many of us don’t spend enough time at home, the struggle to create a soothing and peaceful interior decor is real. Your home should be a place where you can relax. Alas, busy decors and clashing styles can increase your blood pressure and stress levels.

Passive hobbies are the death of people

What’s wrong with watching a little TV? In theory, TV is the perfect way to relax. However, sitting has detrimental effects on heart health. When you spend most of your day sitting at a desk, the last thing you should do is to plan the evening in front of your favorite TV show. The time you spend on your sofa can increase our risk of heart attack by almost 50%. In other words, it’s time to male the household more active!

You can’t transform your home into a health retreat. But, you can actively target common threats and reduce their influence on the household. From indoor air pollution to passive sedentary activities, you need to make your health your priority!

  • I love this article. I think so often we think about toxins etc. making our homes unhealthy that we forget about unhealthy habits.
