How to Have a Stress-Free House Move: An Experts Guide

Moving house can be one of life’s most stressful experiences, or so we’re told, no matter if it’s your first or last move. But much of that comes from it being an experience that most of us only have a small handful of times in our lives. This means that we typically are not very practiced in this activity and so are inefficient and make lots of mistakes. Here we take a look at some of the things that can make the process easier and reduce the stress as much as possible.

Give Yourselves Plenty of Time

Leaving everything to the last minute it’s a classic house moving mistake. It always takes longer than you think if you’re not used to it, our advice would be to take the amount of time you think it’s going to take and double it, even if you’re wrong it’s no problem to end up with extra time at the end although that is rare. You ideally don’t want a last-minute dash.

Get Good Size & Number of Boxes

Packing boxes are essential. If you are using a moving company they might include boxes as part of the package (no pun intended!). But if not then make sure you have enough boxes as there’s nothing worse than running out and ending up trying to use anything you can such as bin bags and laundry baskets etc!

Have Your Transport Sorted

Transport is essential to organize, especially if you’re moving far away, or even overseas. It’s very common to think about transport of your belongings and yourselves but then not to have considered your transport needs immediately following moving in. You may have a new car arriving, your car may be transported there (click here to learn how) or you may be planning to buy a new one on arrival. But if there’s any gap at all, why not get a hire car to ensure you’re not stuck at all, Globe Car can pre-book this for you to get on your arrival.

Make a Backup Plan if the Date Moves

There is a chance that your moving in date can change and this can happen for a variety of reasons, such as the seller having an issue, or your mortgage is delayed. But no matter what the reason you should be prepared with a backup plan while you wait out this delay, as you’ll most likely have left your previous house behind. If you aren’t lucky enough to have friends or relatives in the area who are willing to take you in then you’ll need to find a hotel for a short period, or a rented home if it’s a longer delay.

Have Someone Watch the Kids/Pets

It may be a good idea if you have small children or pets to have someone else earn them for a day or two until the worst of the move is over. If you are moving abroad and taking an animal it’s breast to check if they need to spend any time in quarantine.
