4 Ways to Create a Stress-Free Home Environment

If you are reading this, then you are probably one of the millions of people who encounter some form of stress regularly and would like a bit of a reprieve!

Whether it be looking after kids, pursuing a career, or trying to juggle both, life can be pretty mental at times. That’s why it’s a good idea to try and find some kind of balance wherever possible.

Creating a stress-free home environment might be easier than you think, and if you follow some of our suggestions, you could be well on your way.

Declutter your home

Imagine coming home from a hard day’s work to a home that is well organized, clutter-free, and tidy – there is a place for everything, and everything is in its place. How would it make you feel? The answer is probably stress-free.

A cluttered home can lead to a cluttered mind, so it’s a good idea to create a well organized and junk-free space to live in. If you need to maneuver an assault course of belongings every time you open a closet or drawer, it is going to stress you out even more.

Breaking the tasks into categories will make the decluttering process far easier and less overwhelming, so list each room that needs tackled and add subheadings where necessary.

Have a goodwill box to hand, and get rid of anything that has been gathering dust, no longer fits or that you no longer like. Anything that is not worth giving to charity should be recycled or put in the trash.

Buy lots of different sized storage containers so that you can create a place for everything – it will make it far easier when putting things away. Labeling each container is also a good idea and will make your belongings far easier to find. You might be surprised at the impact that decluttering can have on your stress levels.

Create a relaxing space

If you have a spare room in your home, using it to create a relaxing area for you to get away from it all from time to time can do wonders for your stress levels. Decorate with a muted or subtle color palette and fill it with things that spark joy inside you, such as family photos or wall art that you adore. Light candles to enhance the mood and have your favorite music readily available for you to listen to.

The sound of trickling water can make you feel very relaxed and is used a lot in the ASMR community to reduce stress levels and promote a feeling of calm. There are many water feature ideas online such as an indoor wall fountain or a tabletop water sculpture. They will not only create a relaxing focal point but will make your room feel peaceful and help wash your stress away. Add a comfortable seating area with lots of pillows and textures to your room, and in no time you will have created a wonderful little retreat that you can escape to whenever things are getting too much.

Meal planning

Figuring out what you are going to eat every night can prove stressful so, if you don’t already meal plan, it’s another great way to get more routined and organized. Whilst many people like to plan every meal, even if you only focus on dinner times, it will still make a huge difference to your free time and your stress levels. Meal planning is also proven to be far more cost-effective so it could also help to reduce any money worries you might have.

Develop a good family routine

It’s impossible to create a stress-free home environment unless the other members of your household are on board too. Whilst you might want to be all things to all people, if you truly want your stress levels to decrease, then you need to lighten the load.

There are several ways that children of all ages can get involved. Create a weekly chore list and allocate age-appropriate duties. Younger kids can tidy their toys away every night whilst older children can help with laundry, gardening, and other tasks that need to be done regularly. It will not only teach children responsibility but will create a far better home life for everyone.

If your partner is around in the evenings, agree a rota in terms of cooking or washing up and make sure they help with cleaning and other household duties too. If you all work together you might be surprised at just how much happier and relaxed your home is.
