At-Home Recipes That Use Sour Cream

You can’t have baked potatoes or tacos or Tex-Mex cuisine without sour cream; it’s become a staple condiment to these dishes. However, sour cream is also one of the most underrated ingredients as many people assume it should only be used as a dip. On the contrary, you can add sour cream to any recipe and it will give it a tangy and creamy taste.

There are times when you decide on getting a big tub of sour cream to make tacos or baked potatoes at home. However, you’ll come to realize that these couple of dollops of sour cream aren’t enough to finish the tub, and you end up with a large amount of leftover sour cream. You might also be thinking about this question: can you freeze sour cream to use later? You’d be pleased to know that you can, but it’s not advised to use it as a dip or a spoonful on a baked potato because the texture changes. This is when your creative chops should come in handy. You can discover other recipes to include sour cream because changes to the sour cream won’t be detected with cooked dishes, even if you were to freeze it.

If you don’t want that sour cream tub to go to waste, here are many at-home recipes you can make using sour cream:

1. Bundt Cake

Believe it or not, sour cream goes really well in desserts. It makes your cake creamy, soft, and super-rich. This Bundt cake recipe can be made as a vanilla cake or chocolate by adding cocoa powder.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup softened butter
  • 6 large eggs
  • 3 cups sugar
  • 3 cups flour
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Directions

  • Start by creaming the butter with sugar for 5 minutes or until it becomes fluffy. Add 1 egg at a time, and then mix.
  • When the batter is completely mixed, add the flour, baking soda, salt and beat on low. Then add the vanilla and sour cream.
  • Pour into a greased Bundt cake pan, and bake for 1 and a half hours at 325 F.

2. Sour Cream and Onion Chicken Skillet

Sour cream is also amazing when turned into a savory sauce for your main dish. It’s creamy, tasty, and filling.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds of boneless chicken breasts
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • Olive oil
  • Salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning
  • Sliced green onions
  • 2 tbsp. Cornstarch
  • ½ chicken broth

Directions

  • Start by seasoning your chicken with Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Then in a skillet, add your chicken and cook on high heat for a few minutes. Stir until they’re golden brown.
  • Add the onions and keep stirring.
  • In another bowl, mix the sour cream, cornstarch, and chicken broth. Then mix with the chicken. Cook on low heat and stir occasionally. Let the sauce simmer and serve when the chicken is fully cooked.

3. Zucchini/Broccoli Soup

Sour cream is also a perfect ingredient in making the creamiest of soups. This recipe can be made with either zucchini or broccoli.

Ingredients

  • 4 medium zucchini or one small bag of frozen broccoli
  • 3 tbsp. sour cream
  • 4 cups of chicken broth
  • ½ small onion
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • Salt and pepper

Directions

  • Start off by sautéing the garlic and onions over medium heat in olive oil. Then add the broccoli or cut up zucchini pieces and stir for a few minutes.
  • Then add the chicken broth, salt, and pepper and bring to boil. Then let the soup simmer for about 20 minutes or until the vegetables become super tender.
  • Remove from heat, and blend the soup with an immersion blender until it becomes a puree.
  • Add again on low heat, add the sour cream, and mix.

4. Ground Beef Pasta

This recipe is super easy, and it’s perfect for a busy weekday dinner.

Ingredients

  • 1 bag of penne pasta
  • 1 pound of ground beef
  • 8 ounces cream cheese
  • ½ sour cream
  • 1 pasta sauce jar
  • 1 cup cottage cheese
  • Chopped chives
  • Salt and pepper

Directions

  • Start off by cooking the pasta until it is al dente.
  • Brown the ground beef in another pot and add salt and pepper. Then add the pasta sauce and let it simmer on low heat.
  • Mix the cottage cheese, cream cheese, and sour cream with salt, pepper, and chives.
  • Serve by layering the pasta, sour cream mixture and ground beef.

Sour cream is often underestimated, and not many know the richness of flavor it can bring to a dish. Whether it’s sweet or savory, sour cream tends to add a creamy and tasty flavor to any of your meals. So don’t let that tub of sour cream at the back of your fridge go to waste!

  • I end up with left over sour cream often and use it in a Bundt cake similar to this one. The other recipes look like good ways to use it too.
