Lost Your Job? Don’t Panic!

Sadly, getting fired can happen to anyone, and when it does happen it can be extremely upsetting and stressful. The truth is that sometimes you can be fired for something that you didn’t even realise was an issue, other times you may have done something wrong and as a result have lost your job.

Whatever the reason for being fired, it’s important to focus on what your next move should be, as it is your future that really matters. Yes, being fired is distressing and upsetting, especially when you don’t understand what it is that you have done wrong. However, it’s important to think about your next steps, and try to stay calm and not panic about the situation that you have found yourself in.

Wondering what your next steps should be after you’re fired? Have a read of the tips and ideas below!

Don’t make the situation worse

The one thing that you don’t want to do is make the situation worse. Being told that you’ve been fired can be extremely upsetting, however, it’s important to try and stay calm and not react in a negative way. You might want to shout and scream at your boss, but this will only make a bad situation worse.

However, if you feel like you’ve been unfairly dismissed, there are steps that you can take to manage the situation and ensure that your employer is being fair to you. The best thing to do is to seek some legal advice so that you can learn more about making a claim against your employer and understand what is involved in a settlement agreement between an employer and employee. If you think that you’ve been unfairly dismissed or your employer has not followed the correct procedures, you have every right to make a claim.

Keep your career correspondence positive

When it comes to applying for new jobs, there’s no need to mention that you were fired from your last role. However, that being said, if an application asks for the reason that you left your previous role, it’s important to be open and honest. You can, of course, explain the situation around your termination, particularly if you feel you have been wrongfully dismissed. However, you should not lie.

You can simply say the contract ended or was terminated, which may sound better than outright saying you were fired. However, if you are asked directly if you were fired, then you need to say yes and be honest about the situation.

Focus on moving forward

As difficult as it may be to get over what has happened, it’s important that you focus on your future. Yes, it’s a rubbish situation, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t look to the future.

The best thing that you can do is ensure that you convince potential employers that despite being fired from your previous role, you are a strong candidate and have the potential to be an asset to them.
