Bedroom Redesign Hacks: Where to Save and Where to Splurge

We’ll show you where to spend and where to splurge with these simple hacks that anyone can use to redesign their bedroom. Lighting, storage, and furniture – it’s all in this list.

Splurge: Make Use of Vertical Space

Whether you are short on floor space in a small room or need some extra storage for all your things, you should make use of vertical space.

A floor to ceiling shelving space is a great idea, and you can use boxes on the bottom to store things like winter clothes and bedding. At the top, you can use more boxes for long term storage to keep your space tidy. If you want to hide it all away, think about using a curtain or screen to conceal it all and add extra color and texture to your room.

Save: Use Lighting to Change the Look of Your Room

Lighting in a bedroom is incredibly important, and not just the natural light. You should always do what you can to get as much natural light as possible into your room and have plenty of other light sources to choose from.

The larger room light on the ceiling can be quite oppressive in the evenings, so strategically placed lamps are a good option. LED strip lighting opens up a whole range of possibilities, however. They can be positioned just about anywhere and offer a range of colors. They can be used to highlight a feature, or even as wall-length lighting that encircles the whole room.

Splurge: Make Smart Use of Mirrors to Add the Illusion of Extra Space

If your room is a little small, or if you want to give it a larger and more open feeling, you can use mirrors on the walls to give the illusion of extra space, and even add extra light.

Larger, full-length mirrors are expensive but can be used on walls to add light and space to a room, and even an extra window. If you position a mirror directly opposite a window, you can create an effect that gives the room the appearance of having two windows. Use a mirror that is the same size as the window, and position it as directly opposite as possible to achieve the full effect.

Splurge: Get Yourself a Quality Mattress for a Good Night’s Sleep, Every Night

Possibly the smartest investment you can make, and the best money you can spend in a bedroom is on a high-quality mattress that gives you the support you need for a full night of sleep.

If you get eight hours a night, you spend a third of the day in bed, at least. You can also relax on a good mattress like you would a couch or chaise-longue in the daytime. There are some great deals out there that can help you get a better night’s rest for less.

Save: Make a Reading or Hobby Nook

If you enjoy reading, then you probably have plenty of books in your bedroom, so why not turn a corner of your room or a little nook into your home library? If you aren’t a big reader, you may still have a hobby or two worthy of their own area.

With just a small chair and some storage, you can make a little crafting space. Use a wall-mounted folding desk to save space. A reading space is even easier; just a small bookcase or shelf is all you need, and a comfy chair.

With these simple hacks, you should be able to get the perfect bedroom on any budget by spending your money in the right places.

  • Great ideas. Some simple changes can really change the look of a room. I like your idea for a reading nook.

  • Good idea on the mattress! No amount of money or a nice room will make up for a poor night of sleep...I'm onto finding a new one now!

  • A good mattress is well worth while. I personally do not read in my bedroom. Or have a TV, either. Bedrooms are for sleeping (and fooling around....)
