5 of the Best Flower Seeds to Sow in December

You might not think that December is the time to start planning and planting for the coming year’s blooms. However, spending those few hours of daylight wisely could pay off come March. Besides saving you time in the long run, sowing seeds in December is great if you’re sticking to a budget because it helps spread the cost. With the average household splashing out £150 on their garden each year, spending a little now could mean spending a little less in spring. So, if you’ve got your trowel and gloves at the ready, here are five of the best seeds to sow this December.

Sweet peas

Sow your sweet peas in containers in December and keep them indoors. A conservatory or a window ledge in a bathroom is a great place to house your sweet peas. Cardboard tubes are ideal because it means come spring, they can be planted outdoors without causing disturbance to the roots.

Laurentia

These pretty star-shaped flowers add a touch of soft pastel colour to any garden. These half-hardy annuals can be sown under glass in winter, in a bright spot. Use a heated propagator to help warm the soil when sowing.

Hardy cyclamens

A firm favourite among the winter-garden set, hardy cyclamens, like cyclamen coum and cyclamen hederifolium can be sown in December and enjoyed throughout the winter months. The seeds should be soaked overnight, and then sown straight after in small pots. The pots should be kept at a temperature of between 13-16°C.

Snapdragons

Snapdragons are one of the easiest seeds to sow and grow in December. Sow them under glass in the winter months, and you’ll see these beautiful flowers come into bloom from June onwards. Though they’re usually grown as annuals or biennials, snapdragons are actually short-lived perennials.

Pelargoniums

While pelargoniums are often grown by taking cuttings, you can also grow them from seed. Ideally, they should be surface-sown in a heated propagator. Place them in a bright spot, but out of direct sunlight over the winter months. Why not head down to your local garden centre for some further help and advice, where you’ll also be able to pick up all the supplies you need. If you’re still in need of some inspiration for your garden then Pinterest is a great source for gardens big and small.
