Useful Tips For Selecting The Right Upholstery For Your Furniture

Selecting upholstery is much more than finding a thick fabric in the right color or pattern. It requires time, patience, and a lot of other factors to be considered. You can’t expect yourself to walk into a store, spend 10 minutes looking at 10 options and walk out with the best one.

However, if you already know what you want, the process of finding the right upholstery fabric by the yard becomes a little easy.

In the article, we have shared some useful tips that will make your upholstery selection process a little easy. Here we go.

  • Look beyond the aesthetics

Of course, you would want the upholstery to become a conversation starter, but selecting an upholstery fabric for its aesthetic appeal would be a big mistake. Looking for durable upholstery is the right approach, especially if you have children or pets at home.

Upholstery can be light, medium, or heavy use. Engineered fabrics look gorgeous and last longer. A blend of cotton, polyester, and rayon would be a great choice. You can also count on leather upholstery for the couch and chairs of your living room.

If you are looking for upholstery for your drawing room, consider chenille as it gives a richer look to your furniture while also offering durability.

  • Consider maintenance

Furniture requires maintenance. You may not have the kind of time to give the required care the fabric demands, and hence, filtering the options based on maintenance it needs can help.

Again, if you have kids and pets, look for distressed leather, stain-resistant fabric, and vinyl options. If you live in humid weather conditions, select fabrics that can resist mildew. If you are going to place the furniture outdoors, look for specific outdoor upholstery fabrics.

Washable fabrics are no-fuss fabrics. Even if you spill something, you can easily clean them using the cleaning codes mentioned on their labels.

  • Think about the feel you want

Select the upholstery according to the kind of mood you want to create. For instance, if you wish to give a rich and regal feel to your space, think of fabrics like elegant silks. If you want to create a rustic space, consider leather. For a more contemporary setting, go with linen upholstery.

Every kind of upholstery lends a certain character to space. Hence, be clear of the kind of vibe you want and select the upholstery as per.

  • Check the patterns

Using large patterns on a small furniture piece might make it look very cluttered. On the other hand, using tiny patterns on a large furniture piece is also a faux pas.

Meticulously select the patterns that complement the dimensions of your furniture. If you have a small sofa, look for geometric patterns or stripes that make it look larger.

Patterns don’t just create an illusion of small or large furniture, but also affect the size of the room. If you have a large room, go with bold patterns and vice versa.

  • Select the right color

Color also affects the mood, and hence, you should always select the colors that go with the mood of the setting. For instance, for an urban and edgy vibe, use pop colors. For a sophisticated vibe, stick to neutrals.

Colors also help in creating the illusion of small and large rooms. So, if you have a small space, buy upholstery with light hues.

Also, other elements of the room including the walls, pillows, mats, rugs, and lightings must complement the color of your sofa. Keep these things in mind while zeroing in on the color.

The bottom line

Selecting upholstery for furniture is easier said than done. We hope these tips will help you in finding the right kind of upholstery for your furniture.

  • I like when you said that upholstery should be more than aesthetics, as the durability of the fabric should also be one of the main things to be considered, especially if you have small children as I do so I'm grateful for your advice. I'm planning on reupholstering the seats in our home theatre because my children have very sensitive skin and always complain about those chairs that they always end up sitting on the floor while watching a movie. I'm going to research if it's possible to have a hypoallergenic upholstery option so I can contact a professional to have it done as soon as possible.
