4 Things You Should Know When Choosing AC Filters

Often found in air purifiers and HVAC systems, air filters play a crucial role in keeping you and your family healthy. They help improve your home’s air quality by blocking out impurities like dust, pollen, and other pollutants that may cause health problems. Moreover, the condition of your air filters affects the performance and lifetime of your AC unit, not to mention the maintenance costs and energy bills. For this reason, they require routine cleaning and replacement. On that note, here are four things you need to know when choosing AC filters.

1. The Size of the Filter Matters

AC filters come in a diverse range of sizes designed for different types of AC systems. If your filter is smaller than your AC unit, it will allow unfiltered air through, thus subjecting your family to discomfort and health issues. Oversized air filters will not do you any good either. Whenever shopping for AC air filters for replacement, make sure you get the proper size. You can do this by checking theof the existing filter or asking an experienced HVAC service provider for help. While at it, be careful not to confuse between the actual versus nominal size. You can as well take the measurements manually before making your purchase.

2. The Right Vendor

With so many scams and counterfeit products out there, you can’t be too careful when making purchases. Choosing the right vendor is a huge plus when buying air filters. They will offer you a quality product at the right price. When your air filters are dirty or clogged, a good vendor also takes their time to listen and recommend the option that will work according to your needs. The right seller will also accept returns and refunds just in case the air filters malfunction or won’t fit in your AC. Reviews and testimonials can come in handy when choosing the right vendor.

3. Check the MERV

The Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value is a measure assigned to all filters. If the filter has high-efficiency ratings, it has a high restriction for dust and particles. This is good for people who suffer from allergies or have pets. While looking at the ratings, also consider your AC. Some AC‘s are not strong enough to handle high MERV Filters. This can lead to limited airflow or an overworking AC, which could cause damages that necessitate costly repairs. Factoring these plus the standard rating of air filters will help you make a good choice.

4. The Type of Air Filter

There are several types of AC filters to choose from, with the prices varying widely. This makes it crucial to consider your budget during your purchase. The various types of air filters also perform differently, and each has its maintenance requirements. Disposable fiberglass air filters tend to be the cheapest form but only capture large particles. Disposable pleated air filters cost a bit more but they are more effective at capturing smaller particles. Disposable and permanent electrostatic versions are also available, with the latter being costlier, washable, and thus more durable. Electrostatic air filters for ACs can last up to six years.

When making this tough choice, it pays to get well versed with the terminologies used. This prevents confusion and blunders during the purchase. The above few points can help you avoid getting an air filter that doesn’t meet your needs or damages the AC.
