Smooth Flying With Toddlers

Flying with toddlers is a tricky business. While going on vacation with a baby can be a breeze (it is very likely they will just sleep the whole way), a toddler is another story entirely. Toddlers are mobile, fidgety, and fully independent, and the prospect of being stuck in an airplane seat for the whole trip is not one that will fill them with joy.

Thankfully, there are a bunch of clever techniques to make the trip smoother and more bearable for everyone involved. Flying with toddlers might be tricky, but there is no reason it has to be problematic. So, whether you are heading to explore the best beaches in the Caribbean region or jetting off to Europe for a sophisticated city break, here are some top tips for flying with toddlers.

Fly direct

For toddlers, the most uncomfortable moments of flying are take-off and landing. This is because the changes in pressure play havoc with their little ears. Cutting out layovers as much as possible and reducing the number of times they have to go through this will make their experience onboard a much happier one.

Pay a little extra for conveniences

Paying a little extra for things like pre-boarding can make your whole flight run more smoothly. The extra time you get to settle your little one into their seat and ensure they are comfortable makes a big difference. It is also worth booking them their own seat, rather than taking them on your lap, as the extra space means more comfort for you and for them.

Rent baby gear at your destination

It isn’t just about your toddler’s comfort either. Lugging loads of gear and equipment through the airport can fray the nerves of the most patient parent…so why put yourself through it? These days, there are plenty of organizations that rent all the gear you need and deliver it to your destination airport!

Dress them comfortably and layer like a pro

You might think that the first trip abroad is the perfect time to showcase that cute outfit you made for them. But for toddlers on airplanes, comfort is key. Use plenty of layers so you can change them easily as temperatures will fluctuate significantly from home through airport, plane, and to the final destination, particularly if you are flying somewhere tropical!

Distractions are key

Bring a bunch of travel toys and fun distractions to keep your toddler happy and entertained throughout the flight. This might mean you’ll have to miss out on the in-flight entertainment yourself, but, I promise, a happy toddler is better than any blockbuster film!
