5 Ways Your Church Can Get Involved in Your Community

Churches are a vital part of any community. Whether you run a small church that offers bible study from your home or a large church with huge weekly devotions and masses, any community could use your help in a number of ways.

From offering up your space as a venue for special occasions to volunteering labor and resources for charity, the ways your church can help your community are limitless.

In order to have a healthy and engaged community life, the church should have an educated and dedicated pastor. The number of pastors serving in a church may vary. For example, in large churches, there should be a pastor for elder people, for kids, and for the youth. The duties of a youth pastor encompass a range of essential responsibilities within a church community. These top duties of the youth pastor include spiritual guidance, teaching, and preaching, relationship building, mentoring and discipleship, outreach and evangelism, as well as overseeing youth programming and activities. Their dedication and leadership contribute significantly to the spiritual growth and well-being of both the church and its youth members.

For five ideas on ways that your church can become more involved in your town or city and make a difference, read on.

1. Offer to help out.

A great way to help your community is to call the town hall or ask people you know in town about any residential construction projects happening. Often, those who work in town offices are aware of fantastic residential building construction industry projects like the ones in Brisbane offered by MJS Constructions. While these projects can range from luxury homes to basic houses, you might be surprised to learn about ways towns will be glad for extra help during building projects.

Perhaps a new builder has come to town to put up a residential development that will add to the community’s population and culture. As a member of the church, you could help in a variety of ways. You could bring new residents welcoming material and seasonal gifts like a crucifix at Christmas the same way you might welcome guests in your parish, or you could roll up your sleeves and start planting on town-owned properties by the new complex.

In other cases, town officials may know about low-income homes requiring the use of volunteers to make contractor deadlines. The idea is that you can offer help on any construction project in town and connect to neighbors in ways beyond large print bible readings.

2. Provide Resources

Maybe your church supply of Christian supplies like bibles, Christian art gifts, personal size bibles, scripture logs, holy water pots, sale DVDs, current bestsellers, first communion gifts, and advent calendars has become a bit overwhelming. One way to help the community could be to donate resources like books on how to live a purpose-driven life or extra bible school graduation gifts to the local thrift store or charity closet.

Instead of letting a quick-read bible get dusty in a church basement, you could offer your collection of featured new releases or sample chapters of the NIV Life Application Study Bible to the community at large. Not only would this be a fantastic gesture, but it could be enough to start someone on the giant adventure of beginning their own faith journey.

Another way to share resources could even include donating online gift certificates to your church store. Another option could be as simple as offering free shipping to make those personal-size bibles more affordable or hosting a giveaway for a VBS seat.

3. Open your facility to outside uses.

Whether it’s a wedding, graduation, craft sale with various artists from town, or a special event for the town’s anniversary, you can use your church as a gathering place for everyone. Your church basement could be a place where kids participate in creative activities after school or where the local math teacher offers community classes on personal finance.

Your building could be a fantastic venue for town meetings or simply a great escape place for people looking to do some meditation alone. Consider ways you can offer your space to the community now.

4. Become advocates for change.

Like it or not, the world is changing. People are opting for online shopping and compact bibles over long services. They’re turning toward digital media for God’s word and trying to make sense of a changing world. One way your church can get involved is to be an advocate for social change.

Maybe this means spreading the word about Covid-19 or helping a stressed-out mommy to pay her bills during hard times. Perhaps it means building a platform to spread the psalms to social media. The idea is to use your influence to trigger changes in the world and grow your own community.

5. Network with other faith communities.

Experiencing God is a personal thing often experienced outside of the pew. Not all churches work the same and how they relay information on God’s love and word might look different from one church to another. However, churches have in common their heart for God.

Consider collaborating with other churches to help the community at large. Maybe this means spreading good vibes by passing out free NIV teen study bibles at a community supper with another church. Perhaps it means coordinating town picnics with another church or opening a shared food bank. In the end, in opening up your glorious church and its heart for God, you’ll be helping to make a big difference to all you serve.
