Stylish Updates to Your Outfits With Classic Pearl Necklaces

A modern take on timeless pieces of jewelry like pearl necklaces is what today’s fashion is all about. Once considered an epitome of sophistication and elegance, now slowly becoming a cool and fashionable accessory for everyday wear – the classic pearl necklace gives a modern and edgy look to whatever you choose to wear.

Whether it’s for a formal or casual look, we’ll help you choose a style that best suits you by delving into the different types, styles, and lengths of pearl necklaces.

Pearl necklace styles

There are plenty of different styles for pearl necklaces including a simple single strand, an interval strand, or a pendant necklace, depending on your style and whether you want to turn heads with a unique design.

Single strand necklace

These are most popular since they’re simple and elegant, and can be combined with any outfit whether formal or casual. It pairs perfectly with bridal gowns, cocktail dresses, and even a simple blouse or t-shirt. It adds a touch of elegance to any look, and it compliments your outfit choice very easily.

Interval strand

This style features pearls at intervals on a chain, and simply offers a more informal take on the traditional single strand necklace, combining the elegance of pearls with the casualness of a chain. You can also put different size pearls to make it look more fun or even a combination of colors.

Pendant necklace

This style is a simple modern twist on a classic accessory. Since the pendant is the focus of the necklace, it’s essential to match well with your outfit choice. The styles can range from formal to fun, or extravagant to minimalist, meaning there’s a look for every event. If you’re looking to dress up a little, a diamond pearl necklace can give you the extra glamour you’re looking for.

Pearl necklace types

There are four types of cultured pearls available today and each type is unique and offers something different that makes them magically beautiful.

Akoya pearls

These types of pearls are known for their color, shape, and luster. They’re also considered classic white pearls with perfect round shape and metallic luster. Other rare types of Akoya pearls are natural-color blue, golds, silver-blues, and baroque. Their most popular size ranges from 6.0 mm to 9.0 mm.

Tahitian pearls

Tahitian pearls are rare black pearls from French Polynesia and can be found in a variety of vibrant colors like silver, peacock, cherry, and blue-green. They’re unique because of their large size, round shapes, and brilliant luster, and are grown in a black-lipped oyster called Pinctada margaritifera. The shapes range from 8.0 mm to 16.0 mm.

Freshwater pearls

These types of pearls are known for their satiny luster and natural pastel colors like pink, lavender, peach, and white with sparkling, bright luster and nearly perfectly round. Originally marketed as inexpensive alternatives to Akoya pearls, nowadays they’ve become rivals in both quality and value. They usually come from freshwater mussels. Their sizes range from 2.0 mm to 12.0 mm.

South Sea pearls

South Sea pearls are known for their large White and Golden pearls with a beautiful satin luster. They’re the rarest pearls and are considered to have no rival. They’re saltwater pearls cultivated from oysters found in Northern Australia and South-East Asia. Their shape ranges from 8.0 mm to 20.0 mm, but sizes over 15.0 mm are rare and very expensive.

Pearl necklace lengths

Choosing the length of the necklace has to go well with your style, meaning the combination you’re going to wear. Here are a few popular lengths:

  • Choker (14-16 inches) – sits above the collar bone, and is a popular choice for young girls or petite women. It can add classic glamour to an evening gown or strapless dress.
  • Princess (17-19 inches) – the most popular length which goes well with almost anything and any neckline. It can be combined with a dinner dress or a simple t-shirt and jeans.
  • Matinee (20-24 inches) – sits between the collarbone and bust area, and can have a slimming effect. Goes well with higher necklines and collared shirts.
  • Opera (28-36 inches) – it can be worn in 2 styles, a long single strand or doubled on itself. People also wear multiple layers of opera-length strands.

The different shapes, colors, and sizes make pearl necklaces a simple and timeless jewelry piece that every woman should have. Nowadays, being an elegant and trendy accessory for every occasion, it has become a leading trend among everyone, including men. Shining yet subtle, it’s a classic and modern item that will never go out of style.
