4 Table Saw Tips and Techniques for DIY Moms

Learning new hobbies while you are a stay-at-home parent may be one of the things that you do when you are not busy cleaning and vacuuming the house or preparing meals for your kids and spouse. Whether that hobby is born to break away from routine or there might be a passionate artist hidden inside you that enjoys artistic activities, there is always a fun hobby that can find you.

We are all familiar with hobbies and other DIY crafts that moms do, like scrapbooking, landscape gardening, and baking, among others. But for moms who like taking it to the next level, especially those inclined to woodworking projects, this article might be perfect for you.

Table saws are often called to be the workhorse of a woodshop. They are one of the most versatile tools that you can use for any type of woodwork as they can cross-cut, rip, dado, rabbet, square, miter cut, and shape the edges of the wood. In this article, we will be running down four tips and techniques that you should know if you’re a DIY mom who’s just starting to use a table saw.

  1. Wearing safety equipment

This number one tip that will be given to you should be observed at all times when you are using a table saw. You should wear safety goggles or glasses and hearing protection that suit the level and frequency of noise you will be exposed to. Also, you have to consider the clothing or outfit that you wear during work. It is recommended that you choose well-fitting clothes and avoid using any type of jewelry.

2. Choose a sturdy table saw roller stand

Table saws are no joke. Since they are one of the heavy-duty tools, they require stability without interruptions during woodwork because they emit vibrations. A good table saw roller stand would make all the difference and prevent any serious accidents. Look for a table saw roller stand which is constructed with high-quality material such as steel frames. This will get you all the support that you need without the material being damaged.

3. Use a featherboard

This piece of equipment has an array of fingers that can hold your lumber tightly to your table saw fence. The main use for this is to make sure that you have straight and smooth cuts on your wood. These fingers are angled and also flexible so you can maintain enough pressure while you push your wood piece along the saw.

4. How to cut skinny strips safely

This process can be dangerous because there is no space for the fence and the blade to put a push stick in between. The technique here is you have to screw a wooden heel to the wood scrap of plywood to have a sliding guide to let you leave the guard in place and safeguard your fingers.

Whatever project that includes woodwork will come to mind, always treat the table saw with respect and ample seriousness if you want your fingers to still be intact. For all the DIY moms out there who wanted to try their hand in some woodwork, may the tips mentioned be useful to you.
